#HauteSounds: Solange’s New Album Is As Bold As It Is Beautiful

Beyoncé’s younger sister Solange is well on her way to becoming one of the most honest and political musicians of her generation. With her new album A Seat At The Table, the triple-threat singer-songwriter-producer delivers a major statement about what it means to be a black woman in America today.

Having topped the Billboard charts within weeks of the album’s release, the 21-song album took the 30-year-old singer nearly 4 years to complete. And boy, has the wait been worth it.

The album’s standout track is the deceptively euphoric Cranes In The Sky (check out the video above), whose subtle grooves and delicate vocals belie Solange’s aching lyrics about the way black people suppress pain. It’s in stark contrast to the peaceful beauty of the video.

The only other video released so far is Don’t Touch My Hair (above), but there are 19 other songs written by Solange, as well as special guests like Lil Wayne, Kelela, Q-Tip, The-Dram, Dev Hynes, and Kelly Rowland. With co-production by Raphael Saadiq, this stunning new album is a document of historical significance for the formidable manner in which it encapsulates black cultural and social history with such richness and truth.

Thank goodness for Solange.
