Gather around children, it is time for some trivia! According to Yuval Noah Harari, author of Sapiens: A Brief History Of Mankind, we are just all a bunch of gossipers in our bones, which in turn gave birth to language and the idea of human connection. The text in her book reads, “Social cooperation is our key for survival and reproduction. It is not enough for individual men and women to know the whereabouts of lions and bisons. It’s much more important for them to know who in their band hates whom, who is sleeping with whom, who is honest and who is a cheat.” This information about which individuals could be trusted — in other words, gossip — allowed early humans not only to survive but also to expand their tribes.”

The idea that language began with gossip and sharing stories is fascinating and makes humans more, well. human! But somewhere down the line, changing languages also became the reason for separation and distance among humans, being one of the main causes of disconnect. Yet, when you finally get to genuinely bond with a person from another culture, it is pretty evident how we are all so similar in essence; even though we grew up in different cultures.

The video of a Japanese woman speaking fluent Bengali is going viral and we think the reason is how relatable she feels speaking the local language!

In the video, we can see a Bengali individual by the name of Apurba Das on a trip to Japan. Apurba ran into the woman, called Sakura, who proceeded to recount the story of how she came to learn the language and is so good at it. Since the video is long for a complete translation, some excerpts from her chat with Apurba says, “There was a short summer program, I stayed in Kolkata for two months. I liked reading Bangla, so I decided I would do it long term. I stayed on for another six months, then I went to Delhi to study Hindi. When asked, which language she liked better Hindi or Bangla, she said Bangla has many expressions. Bangla is a rich language. I have read Feluda’s stories (a character created by director Satyajit Ray). I have seen a few Bangla films too. I have seen Pather Panchali (another Ray classic).

The woman also spoke at length about some of her favourite Bengali things, “I love Rabindranath Tagore’s Postmaster. I loved ilish maach (a signature Bengali dish), but in Japan, we don’t have any fish preparations with mustard.  I did not like roshogolla the first time I had it, but loved it the second time”, she elaborates.

As someone who actually grew up a Bong, I was taken aback by how good her diction is. She is speaking in a very clean dialect, something that even I haven’t been able to nail till now. Kudos to Sakura and her love for learning languages; I love it when people manage to surprise you with their passions like such. So grab a Bengali pal and have them translate her words for you; you learn something new every day!
