CRPF Promotes Two Women Officers As Inspector Generals. Setting Examples And How!

Women have been considered the weaker of the two genders in our patriarchal world for far too long. This has led to a clear divide in a woman’s and a man’s jobs. Of which jobs that need the woman in charge of protecting someone have never been deemed fit for her because “she herself needs protection”. But in what comes as a piece of good news from India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), two women officers have been promoted to Inspector Generals (IG). Annie Abraham has been appointed as the IG of the Rapid Action Police Force while Seema Dhundia is the IG of the Bihar Sector.
As per reports, A CRPF spokesperson said that both these officers had joined the paramilitary force in 1987. They were a part of the first batch of female officers in the force. At the United Nations, Annie Abraham and Seema Dhundia have commanded an all-woman Indian police contingent. Not just this, they have also been bestowed with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the ‘Ati Utkrisht Sewa Padak’ for their contribution to the force and their service.
Annie Abraham held the post of the DIG (Intelligence) and led the all-woman troop during the UN’s Mission in Liberia, and also as the DIG in the Kashmir Operations Sector. Whereas Seema Dhundia was the first contingent commander of the all-woman force during the UN’s Mission in Liberia. Apart from this, she also held the post of the DIG in the Rapid Action Force (RAF).

The RAF is deployed in times of riots and in sensitive areas during protests. Their service is also sought when heavy crowd management in cases of VIPs visits. The Bihar Sector is a part of the CRPF that takes charge of the four battalions that are deployed during the anti-Naxal operations.
This is such great news! Women in the army set examples for others who aspire to join the force and serve the nation. But we need more women on these posts so that it becomes normal to have women in charge in the army, too.
