Cricketer Dinesh Karthik Makes A Sexist Joke While Doing Commentary At A Cricket Match.

There are a few things that every family group on WhatsApp has in common. A cheesy name, people sharing corny ‘good morning’ images and that one uncle who keeps forwarding misogynistic “husbands always have to go through so much since the wives are always hysterical” jokes even though no one replies. These jokes irk me like nothing else for three very simple reasons. One, they are downright sexist, two, they perpetuate every stereotype about women ever, and three, they victimise the men. There is nothing more exasperating than an ignorant man. Speaking of ignorant men, veteran cricketer Dinesh Karthik acted like one of those uncles on a WhatsApp group chat while he was commentating on the second England-Sri Lanka ODI cricket tournament.

He started by talking about how batsmen aren’t fond of their own bats. Then he went on to say that bats are like the “neighbour’s wife” because they usually “feel better”. Is this supposed to be a joke? While commenting Dinesh Karthik said, “Batsmen and not liking bats, they go hand in hand. Most of the batters don’t seem to like their bats. They either like another person’s bat, or…Bats are like a neighbour’s wife. They always feel better.”

What kind of a bullshit analogy is this? This is just offensive and downright sexist. It’s time we dropped these “wife” jokes. What’s worse is that Dinesh Karthik is being hailed for his witty commentary. Basically, he’s told all the millions of people who intently watch cricket matches and listen to the commentary that this is how he perceives women. Now, they are going to get encouraged to forward jokes like these and pass sexist comments too. What a fun cycle!

A lot of you will wonder why we’re getting so butthurt over something that’s clearly a joke. But not all jokes are funny. So please, next time you hear a joke that degrades women, stand up for your gender.
