Baisakhi 2025: History, Significance, And How To Celebrate The Holy Festival

Baisakhi, also known as Vaishakhi, is a very important festival celebrated in North India with much delight and excitement. It is celebrated by people all over the country as the start of the harvest season and the solar New Year in portions of North India.

According to the Sikh calendar, this festival was formerly commemorated on the first days of Vaishakh month (April-May), which corresponds to April 13 or 14 on the Gregorian calendar. According to it, Baisakhi 2025 will be celebrated on April 14, Monday.

History Of Baisakhi

According to legend, on Vaisakhi, Guru Gobind Singh challenged any Sikh willing to lay down his life. Five people volunteered out of a throng of approximately a thousand. Instead of executing the volunteers, the Guru christened them with ‘Amrit’ and founded a five-member troop of saint-soldiers known as ‘Khalsa’. The five Khalsa men were known as the Five Ks, which represented Kesh (hair), Katchera (underwear), Kangha (comb), Kirpan (sword), and Kara (steel ring).

Following that disastrous day, sprinkling nectar or “Amrit” has been a frequent practice during Sikh ceremonial baptisms. Aside from its historical significance, the day symbolizes the ripening of the Rabi crop and is celebrated with great fanfare by the people of Punjab. However, Vaisakhi is considered New Year’s Day in Hinduism and is widely celebrated in several Indian states.
