Award Winning Filmmaker Trisha Das Reveals That Initially She Was Sexually Harassed At Her Workplace

Until it happens to you, workplace harassment is something we just read about in articles or see on TV shows. But it happens to more women than we know and in every profession. Of course, women in our entertainment industry are more susceptible to workplace sexual harassment than in other fields. Although, it’s gotten a little better over the last few years. I believe that the #MeToo movement, even though it died down, has caused lecherous men to think three times before making an unsolicited move. While that is amazing, we hear stories from women who’ve been through a nightmarish ordeal now and then.

Most recently, National Award-winning documentary filmmaker and author Trisha Das shared how she was sexually harassed multiple times at a workplace. Without getting into the names or any further details, Trisha revealed that it was a common practice in her workplace and that all the women would support each other.

She told the media, “Back in the day when I was working as a documentary filmmaker, I was sexually harassed multiple times. But it was a fairly common practice at the workplace and women would look out for other women to comfort each other and protect each other.” She added, “There were no social media where someone can share their story, so there was no accountability also. Remaining silent after facing such harassment was also common…men had no fear of repercussion. Social media and constant conversation around sexual harassment at the workplace, and the #MeToo movement has created the momentum. While it is empowering for women, I hope this movement does not get politicised.”

Trisha was then asked why she never openly shared her story during the #MeToo movement. To this, she replied saying that the men were not well known and she isn’t in touch with them anymore. But she is glad that the #MeToo movement has succeeded in making things better for women in the last five years.

She said, “I am not in touch with any of them, I do not even know where they are now! Back then we were not on social media or on WhatsApp that I could track them down. Having said that, I am glad how the situation has changed now. If men changed their behaviour knowing that there is a possible repercussion, even if there is a change in thoughts out of that fear, it is good; it reduces the amount of sexual harassment in the first place. That too is good!”

While we are glad that the #MeToo movement has left some lasting impact, it doesn’t change the fact that women were frequently harassed before it. By speaking up Trisha might’ve empowered more women to confront their assailants. It’s always better late than never, right?
