Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi has been proven guilty in a fresh set of corruption charges that have been filed against her. Under the charges, she has been sentenced to five years in jail. A Myanmar court has accused her of accepting a bribe of $600,000 cash and gold bars. This was just the first of the 11 corruption cases that have been filed against her and she faces 15 years in prison for each. The trials that are being held by the court are taking place behind closed doors and this is why the sources that have been quoted by the agencies have declined from identifying themselves.
Even journalists have been prohibited from attending this case’s hearings and Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyers are not allowed to talk to the media as well. The 76-year-old has been placed under house arrest since February 2021 because of a military coup that overthrew her government. This coup sent the country of Myanmar into a state of civil unrest and Aung San Suu Kyi has been charged with a long list of charges that could keep her in jail for a long, long time.
This is not it, she has been previously sentenced to six years in prison for provoking the military and violating the COVID-19 protocols. She will fight these charges while remaining under house arrest. The military coup had resulted in over 1700 people being killed and over 13,000 being arrested in a crackdown.

In the 2020 general election, Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, National League For Democracy, won a landslide victory. But the elected leaders were not allowed to assume their seats because the army arrested them. The army claimed that there an electoral fraud had been committed and therefore they had to arrest the leaders and Suu Kyi.
