Anurag Kashyap Talks To His Daughter About Pre-Marital Sex; Says Our Moral Stance Needs To Change On This

They say that Indian fathers have a very complex relationship with their children. I’ve never understood this considering I have the best relationship with my father. We joke around, cuddle. He knows exactly how old I am as well as what I do for a living. Of course, he isn’t without his quirks. Like most Indian fathers, his sneeze sounds like a gunshot and sometimes he shares sexist and homophobic Whatsapp forwards. But we’re slowly working on that. At the end of the day though, I know for a fact that my father is the only man in the whole world I trust blindly and wholeheartedly.

Unlike most fathers, mine isn’t very traditional. He’ll buy me sanitary pads without feeling ashamed, help me sneak alcohol into boring family functions and won’t mind me wearing short clothes or hanging out with boys as long as I am safe, obviously. And so, when I watched Aaliyah Kashyap’s Father’s Day video with her father, Anurag Kashyap, I could relate so much.

In this Father’s Day video, Aaliyah asked Anurag ‘awkward questions’ that most people are afraid to ask their fathers. All the questions were sent in by her viewers and covered a variety of topics. From what Anurag thinks of Aaliyah’s boyfriend, Shane Gregoire, to his thoughts on menstruation and drunk dials. All the men, who have daughters, need to watch this video and take notes from Anurag.

During the video, Aaliyah asked Anurag what his thoughts were on the concept of pre-marital sex. Anurag said, “It’s a question that we asked in the 80s. I think now we should get beyond that question. That’s a question that we used to ask when we were in college and we used to moralise.” Aaliyah added, “But I don’t think it needs to be like that anymore. I think times have moved a lot.”

Anurag went on to say, “No, we need to understand sexuality and sex and our own human body. We need to understand that first before we just jump into doing things out of peer pressure. Anything done out of peer pressure is not good. Anything done to look cool is not good. Anything done to belong to a certain group of people is not good. Do it because you want to do something because you feel ready and you have someone. It has to be special.”

This is the kind of open and friendly mentality every man in our country should have. Limiting and putting restrictions on our daughters is not going to work anymore. We need to educate them and then trust them to make good decisions. In the course of the video, Aaliyah asks father Anurag another very interesting question. What would his reaction be if she told him she was pregnant. Yikes. I think this is a question a lot of people are terrified to ask their fathers. In response, Anurag said that he would tell her about the consequences but support her decision no matter what.

He said, “I will ask you, ‘Are you sure you want this?’ And whatever you choose to do, I will always go with it, you know that. I will accept it. Whatever choices you make, I will accept it. I would absolutely tell you that there is a price to pay for it but at the end of it, I will still be there.”

Watching Aaliyah and Anurag’s dynamic in this video was very exciting. We also got some juicy titbits about Aaliyah drunk calling her father while being inside cupboards at parties. That’s hilarious. It’s the kind of Father’s Day video that everyone needs to watch. Especially father’s.
