All You Need To Know About Chhath Puja 2025 And The Four-Day Celebration

As the sun rises over rivers and ghats this October, millions of devotees across India will once again come together to celebrate Chhath Puja 2025, a festival that beautifully weaves together spirituality, discipline, and deep gratitude towards nature. Dedicated to Lord Surya (the sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, the festival is observed over four days with strict fasting, purity, and rituals that symbolise balance and endurance. About Chhath Puja 2025

The celebration begins with Nahay-Khaay on October 25, when devotees purify themselves with a ritual bath in rivers or ponds. The day involves preparing and eating a simple, sattvic meal that typically involves rice, bottle gourd, and chana dal, symbolising the cleansing of both body and soul. The second day, Kharna, observed on October 26, marks the beginning of a 36-hour fast. Devotees abstain from food and water throughout the day, breaking the fast only in the evening after offering a sweet prasad made of jaggery kheer, fruits, and chapatis cooked over a clay stove. This act represents gratitude and endurance, two main themes of Chhath.

Sandhya Arghva, on October 27, is perhaps the most visually stunning part of the festival. As the sun sets, families gather on the riverbanks dressed in vibrant traditional attire to offer milk, fruits, and Thekua (a jaggery-sweetened delicacy) to the setting sun. Songs and devotional chants fill the air as devotees thank the sun God for sustaining life. The final day, Usha Arghya, takes place at dawn on October 28, when prayers are offered to the rising sun. The ritual marks new beginnings, hope, and renewal of energy. The festival concludes as devotees break their fast with prasad, marking the end of their spiritual journey.
