A Recent Study Shows That Obesity Can Lead To Infertility In Women.

The words ‘fat’ or ‘obesity’ have developed such negative connotations that people are afraid to even talk about it. Despite what our uber-traditional beauty standards have drilled in our heads, being fat or obese is nothing to be ashamed of. However, one can’t deny the fact that obesity comes with a lot of very serious health risks. And a recent study shows that it can also lead to infertility amongst women. Yikes.

A recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine highlights some ill-effects obesity has on one’s health and how it can also cause infertility. According to its findings, obese women have excess adipose (fat) tissue. This increases the chances of several endocrine or hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism, PCOS, and insulin resistance, which can cause fertility-related problems in women. This is scary to think about. For women in India, this is obviously more of a concern because women are seen as baby producing machines and this could hamper their chances significantly.

Researchers conducted this study and collected data from 20,746 participants aged between 10 and 40 years. They also focused on how obesity is linked to a person’s blood sugar. They found that obese people have a much higher blood sugar level than people who are not obese. The study also listed the cardiometabolic disease risk factors that come with obesity. These are high blood pressure, low good cholesterol levels, and high glycated haemoglobin (blood sugar).

According to this study even obese men run a high risk of infertility. Obesity can result in erectile dysfunction as it causes a decrease in testosterone levels and increases inflammation.

While being obese is not wrong, we’ve got to remember that it causes a significant number of health issues.
