42-Year-Old Mumbai Woman Gets Scammed Out Of 6.25 Lakhs On A Matrimonial Site

Can we all acknowledge the amount of pressure that is put on getting married? Especially for women. Moreover, pressure is put more on women who are older because they are considered to be past the marriageable age. They are hounded from the time they are in their 20s and sometimes, even earlier than that. God forbid if a woman crosses her 20s without getting married, that is when the pressure really starts. Women in their 30s or 40s have it much worse. Because of this, there are many cases where women end up settling for partners that might be abusive or mistreat them. Considering how shaadi season is in the air and almost everyone is talking about it (including me), I believe it is only fair we discuss the flip side of the coin. A 42-year-old Mumbai woman was conned out of 6.25 lakhs by a man she met on a matrimonial site.
A cyber fraudster posing as a Navy captain on a Marathi matrimonial website conned a 42-year-old Mumbai woman out of 6.25 lakh rupees. According to what the complainant told the police she spent all her savings on this and went as far as mortgaging her mother’s and sister’s jewellery for the fraudster. The FIR against him was filled with Charkop police on November 6.

The Mumbai woman said that she has made a profile on Sangam matrimonial in March 2021 where she met the fraudster. He sent her a message, feigning interest in her under the fake name of Alex Patel, a Navy captain.
The Mumbai woman told him that she doesn’t know how to speak English well to which he didn’t object and said that he was already in love with her and after chatting for a week he said that he had sent her expensive gifts via courier.
After a few days, the Mumbai woman was contacted by the fraudster’s partner in crime as he called her and claimed that he is from the courier company and that she will have to pay some processing fees to get the parcel delivered. After she paid the initial fees, the fraudster told her that as the gift included $30,000 along with a lot of jewellery, she would have to pay more. He ended up conning her out of 6.25 lakhs.
While the true motivation behind her compliance is not specified, it is not out of the realm of reality to assume that she was under pressure to get married, considering she is in her 40s. And it is quite sad that women have to settle for these kinds of things just because they are expected to follow a set schedule or timeline to get married.
