Can We Please Stop Obsessing Over Alia Bhatt, Suhana Khan, And More Celebs Repeating Outfits? Time To Normalise It!

The internet nearly broke resharing pictures of Alia Bhatt re-wearing her wedding saree for receiving the National Film Awards. Comments were thrown around everywhere praising her for promoting sustainability so much so that Suhana Khan went on to say “If Alia Bhatt can re-wear her wedding lehenga, we can also repeat an outfit for a party.” Well, Suhana, we’ve kind of been doing that already.

The “relatable” era of Bollywood

In this day and age, celebrities are trying hard to escape the hate they get for not doing a good job by becoming more “relatable” so that the audience sympathises with them. But the thing is, I cannot relate with Alia Bhatt or Suhana for that matter. What’s hailed as a sustainable power move by celebs often feels more like a tone-deaf reality check for the rest of us. Here’s why the whole “celebrity repeat wear” narrative might be stuck on fast fashion.

The Concept Of Re-Wearing Clothes Is Different For Us

When Alia repeats a saree, it’s usually a couture masterpiece costing more than most people’s yearly budget. Suhana Khan repeating a vintage dress at the Ambani pre-wedding is probably a designer find most of us could only dream of. These high-end repeats paint a distorted picture of sustainable fashion when we do it every day with our clothes. So, going out of our way to celebrate such things should not be the case. I have been repeating my dresses for a really long time.

The Pressure To Always “Give”

Celebs constantly have eyes on them and people always expect their next best outfit. Each outfit is dissected for them by the fashion police. So, when they do repeat, it’s often framed as a bold statement or a conscious effort to “save the planet.” This puts the pressure on regular folks to constantly justify re-wearing clothes, something that should be the norm, not a red carpet moment.

What Sustainability Really Looks Like

While I do understand what they are trying to communicate, this is just not a praise-worthy thing. Alia Bhatt re-wearing her wedding saree is just her trying to signify that this day is as special to her as her wedding day and nothing else. So when you re-wear a dress standing in Italy with a very expensive glass of champagne and designer bags, it does not look sustainable or relatable for that matter.

Most of us repeat because, well, we can’t afford a whole new wardrobe every season. But that doesn’t make it any less sustainable! Let’s not praise the celebrities for doing what we do regularly. Mending, shopping second-hand, and prioritising quality over quantity – these are the true sustainable fashion heroes.
