Everything You Need To Know About Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Of Patiala, Inspiration Behind Diljit Dosanjh’s 2025 Met Gala Look

At the 2025 Met Gala, Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh made headlines with a striking all-white look designed by Prabal Gurung. With a tailored sherwani-inspired suit, layered drapes, and elaborate jewellery, Dosanjh’s appearance was more than just fashion, it was a direct nod to one of the most extravagant Indian royals of the 20th century: Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.

Born in 1891, Bhupinder Singh became Maharaja of Patiala at just nine years old, following the death of his father, Maharaja Rajinder Singh. A member of the Phulkian dynasty, Singh ruled Patiala from 1900 until his death in 1938. Known for his strong ties to the British Raj, he gained a reputation for his political presence, military service, and lavish lifestyle.

Under his reign, Singh took on diplomatic responsibilities, representing India at the League of Nations and the Imperial War Conference. He also held the position of Chancellor of the Chamber of Princes for over a decade, advocating for the rights of princely states. His influence, however, extended far beyond politics.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh is perhaps most remembered today for his passion for architecture, sports, and luxury. He commissioned grand buildings in Patiala and Shimla, donated land and resources to establish institutions, and supported cricket across India. Notably, he captained the Indian cricket team in 1911 and played in several first-class matches.

But his opulence has become the stuff of legend. Singh owned over 40 Rolls-Royce cars, had the first personal aircraft in India, and commissioned what was once the largest single Cartier jewellery order: the Patiala Necklace. Made in 1928, the original necklace featured thousands of diamonds, including a 234-carat De Beers yellow diamond. It symbolised not just wealth but the cultural grandeur of Indian royalty.

Dosanjh’s necklace at the Met Gala, a modern interpretation of this historic piece, draws from that legacy. His look, accentuated by a map of Punjab embroidered on his cape, was a powerful cultural statement. In channelling Bhupinder Singh, Dosanjh bridged historical opulence with contemporary representation, spotlighting an Indian royal who continues to influence fashion and identity nearly a century later.

For Diljit Dosanjh, the night wasn’t just a fashion debut, it was a tribute to a lineage of Indian royalty and pride.
