Indians have been taking the global entertainment industry by storm this year. After bringing Oscar home, Indian stars are all set to make their presence felt at the Cannes Film Festival 2023. And it’s not just Indian celebs who are gracing the red carpet this year. On May 17, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan not only walked the red carpet but also inaugurated the Indian Pavilion at Cannes at Marché du Film.
Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan inaugurated the Indian Pavilion at Cannes 2023 in the presence of the Ambassador of India to Frace Jawed Ashraf, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Prithul Kumar and leading actors of the Indian film industry.
Taking to Twitter, Dr L Murugan shared some pictures from the Cannes 2023 red carpet as he posed alongside Oscar-winning filmmaker Guneet Monga. Sharing the details of his Indian outfit, the Minister shared that he is proud to have an opportunity to attend the famous Cannes Film Festival and grace the red carpet in a traditional Tamil Veshti and shirt. His outfit also had the Indian flag printed on it.

As per the Press Bureau of India press release, Dr L Murugan spoke at the gathering of delegates from India as well as actors at Cannes 2023. Speaking at the event, the minister highlighted that India is one of the world’s largest makers of films with more than 3000 films in over 50 languages which is an example of India’s skill for storytelling.
Citing the example of Guneet Monga’s Oscar-winning documentary, The Elephant Whisperers, Dr L Murugan said that good content has no boundaries and India is in an era where we are taking our local content and making it global. He also highlighted how Indians have made their mark in global cinema by highlighting that it’s rather impossible to find a film which does not have a person of Indian origin involved in the making, be it VFX or animation or production.

Stressing upon the data, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan revealed that the Indian entertainment industry has witnessed a growth rate of 11.4% with a revenue of Rs 2.36 trillion. He also shared that after the Covid-19 pandemic, the box office revenues of 2022 were nearly three times the revenues of 2023. Looks like the Indian film industry is going place and we stan it!
