Top 10 Iconic Met Gala Looks Of All Time!

It’s that time of the year again when the world gets excited for a Monday. It’s MET Gala week, and we can’t hold our excitement! This year’s theme for the Met Gala is ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.’ The subject delves into the world of Black Dandyism, a cultural and fashion trend that has historically revolved around black males who used dress to express themselves and reject oppression. Co-chaired by Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams, we couldn’t wait but revisit some of the iconic looks that made our years worth remembering!

1. Rihanna In Vanlentino, 2023

How can we not start with Rihanna? Mother Rihanna wore an exquisite camellia-inspired gown by Pierpaolo Piccoli. The floral appliquéed hood was an illusory take on designer Karl Lagerfeld’s work in Chanel. The hood was dropped on the red carpet to expose a stunning white gown decorated with a single camellia and Riri’s growing baby bump. She added drama to the look by adding a red lip with white eyelash embellished sunglasses. Simply Iconic.

2. Zendaya In Tommy Hilfiger, 2019

Taking you back to 2019 when Zendaya literally looked like a fairy princess on the red carpet of the iconic Met Gala. The actor and her stylist, Law Roach, took things to the next level by decking her up in a custom-made Tommy Hilfiger Cinderella gown while Roach dressed as her fairy godmother. Who would have thought? Her bag was, of course, Cinderella’s carriage. The footage of her swirling through the carpet was a dream come true.

3. Alia Bhatt In Sabyasachi, 2024

Queen Alia Bhatt hit it out of the park with her second Met Gala look. She walked up the Met staircase in a custom-designed mint-green sari by Indian couturier Sabyasachi, diamonds flashing from her loosely braided hair to her train. In keeping with this year’s theme, inspired by—and titled after—J.G. Ballard’s short tale ‘The Garden of Time,’ the actor’s ethereal ensemble featured a 23-foot-long train embellished with blooms painstakingly hand-embroidered using silk thread, glass beading, and semi-precious jewels.

4. Blake Lively In Versace, 2022

Blake Lively co-chaired the Met Gala in 2022 and also gave her best look of all time. The twist was its change from bronze to green to mirror the oxidation of the Statue of Liberty. It was embroidered with crystals, metallic leather, and tri-tone copper foil. When Lively arrived, the dress featured a huge copper bow at the hip, which led to a lengthy, dramatic train. The bow unravelled as Lively walked down the red carpet, turning green.

5. Kendall Jenner In Givenchy, 2021

Whilst everyone was looking at Kim Kardashian’s all black look, our eyes were stuck on Kendall Jenner’s bejewelled ensemble. The dress went in perfect sync with ‘beautiful, beautiful gowns’ as it was a homage to Audrey Hepburn’s My Fair Lady character, Eliza Doolittle. Kendall Jenner teamed up with Givenchy (by Matthew Williams) to wear a breathtakingly stunning crystal-adorned sheer gown and choker, which was inspired by Hepburn’s original.

6. Cardi B In Thom Browne, 2019

While this one received mixed opinions, one thing about the Met Gala ensembles we appreciate an ensemble that they tell stories. Something that isn’t conventionally appealing – it’s not your typical gown – yet is breathtaking and gorgeous in its own right. According to Browne, this style was inspired by the elegance of the female form and perfectly reflects the year’s theme, playing on the idea of exaggeration in its dimensions and scale.

7. Mona Patel In Iris Van Herpen, 2024

‘Mystery girl’ Mona Patel instantly grabbed everyone’s attention with her exquisite butterfly dress. She turned to Iris Van Herpen with the help of celebrity stylist Law Roach. The neutral-toned strapless gown worked magic to create stunning dimensions. The outfit also featured moving butterfly sleeves attached to gold cuff bracelets that doubled up as jewellery. She created her own orchid at ‘The Garden Of Time.’

8. Lady Gaga In Brandon Maxwell, 2019

Mother Lady Gaga blessed us with not one, not two, not three, but FOUR looks! Starting with an extensive fuchsia pink ball gown with a sprawling train that took over the red carpet completely. Each layer was taken off to reveal the next outfit, an LBD, followed by a hot pink gown, and eventually a black crystal-encrusted underwear set, fishnets, and platform boots – the quintessential mother monster. She did her homework and we were happy!

9. Beyonce In Givenchy, 2015

Bryonce came in wearing the ultimate naked dress by Givenchy that matched the colour of her skin and had strategically placed gems all over. She paired it with a high ponytail, to show her ensemble properly (Thank god for that!) and it was the perfect way to make a comeback after her elevator scandal with Jay Z that dominated the headlines at that time.

10. Kim Kardashian In Marilyn Monroe Dress, 2022

Kim Kardashian surely made headlines with her 2022 Met Gala ensemble. She chose to wear the dress that the iconic Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The dress was borrowed from Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum in Orlando. The internet personality even dyed her hair blonde for the event and ultimately wore a replica after walking the red carpet, as the dress was too fragile.
