Tarun Tahiliani Is Presenting His First-Ever Digital Fashion Show On An Instagram Live Today. Is This The Future Of Fashion?

This time last year, designers were prepping for the winter-festive edition of the biannual fashion week. This year, due to the global pandemic, it looked like fashion shows would have to take a backseat, considering that crammed studios and ateliers and dozens of teams of people working under one roof was simply not an option. But there’s a saying that the show must go on.

Thankfully, the fashion industry, much like every other industry today, are turning to digital platforms to put on a grand but virtual fashion show. Ever since the news of fashion shows going virtual broke, we couldn’t wait to experience the first ever digital fashion show on our personal screens. Well, the wait ends today. Turns out, Designer Tarun Tahiliani is showcasing his bridal and festive collection 2020 on Instagram Live today at 8 PM and we are so excited.

The ace couturier who’s known for his regal bridal collections is presenting his ‘Pieces of You’ collection on a digital runway through a live-stream on Instagram that everyone can attend. Even coronavirus has not dissuaded the people from getting married. The designers know it all too well and understand that bringing in a bridal collection even in these times is only a smart move. “As a country that loves celebrations, we know that our weddings and festivals – however scaled-down – will happen, no matter what. With that said, rather than sitting around and doing nothing, we want to be a part of something that spreads joy and uplifts people in these tough times.” “By putting this collection and these creations out, we hope to bring attention to our designs and also the intricate work on each garment. This will help us to sustain our business and in turn employ artisans. This collection is the outcome of us not giving up hope and working towards making our business more secure for the future,” he added.

The designer whose resplendent shows are normally attended by the who’s who of Bollywood and has around 80 models walking his runway, is showcasing his collection with only 7 models this time to ensure safety. “Normally, I work with 80 models but this year, there will only be seven. Since we have a lot of rooms around the courtyard at the atelier, each model will be provided with her own room. The hair and makeup teams will be given hazmat suits and face shields.” He also said “Even though there are a few ‘clustered’ walks on the ramp, strict social distancing will be followed.”

Talking about the preparation of the collection and putting together a virtual fashion show, the designer told TOI, “Our teams, some of whom have been coming to the studio, and others who have been working from home, have been working hard to put this show together. Keeping in mind the space needed to put on a fashion show and social distancing norms, we decided to use the mood board room of our Gurgaon atelier for the show. It is a long 90-100ft long room. We painted the entire room to match the concrete walls. We adorned the walls with miniature paintings and for the floors, we chose the most exquisite collection of old Indian, Mughal and Persian carpets, which we will keep changing as the show progresses.”

He posted a glimpse of his collection on his Instagram account with an invitation for all to attend the live show and witness India’s first-ever big digital fashion show.

Virtual fashion shows are, without a doubt, the future of fashion, the foreseeable future at least and it’s actually better for the brand as well as the customer since a virtual live shows are more inclusive, interactive and accessible. Don’t know about you but we are totally RSVPing to attend Tarun Tahiliani’s virtual fashion show.
