Her Mother’s Shawl, Tuxedo Sarees…Sonam Kapoor Is Infusing Fun Desi Elements Into Her Parisian Looks And It’s Fabulous

Her Mother’s Shawl, Tuxedo Sarees…Sonam Kapoor Is Infusing Fun Desi Elements Into Her Parisian Looks And It’s Fabulous

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja is doing the Haute Couture 2020 rounds in Paris right now and we are charmed by the fashion choices she has been making. The actress is well-versed in how to pull off a Parisian fashion girl look, yet she has decided to throw the rulebook out the window and do her own thing. As the FROW guest for multiple designers, this style chameleon drenched her high fashion ensembles with Indian elements. Her sartorial experiments include stealing a shawl from her mother, choosing silhouettes that represent design elements from home and a bling game so strong it’ll make other attendees of the fashion week feel underdressed!

A Desi Daughter

For Valentino’s Haute Couture runway presentation, Sonam chose an all-white ensemble from their Spring/Summer 2020 collection. The pleated maxi dress comes with a Grecian tie-up rope belt and is an ode to the classic white button-down shirt. Sonam paired the maxi with a precious jamawar shawl she managed to steal from her mum Sunita Kapoor, thanks to the nimble hands of sister and stylist Rhea Kapoor. Interestingly, the Jamwar belongs to an old Khamiri craft and sometimes it takes decades to finish one single piece. Do we dare speculate how mad Sunita might be that her girls just nicked it from her?!

The Saree Tuxedo

If you though your throwback game was strong, listen to this! Sonam walked her first Cannes Film Festival red carpet back in 2011 in a white Jean Paul Gaultier gown and Amrapali jewels. And for the pioneer French designer’s final show, Sonam did the same, but only with a smart saree tuxedo paired with a statement rustic silver and pearl necklace. We are also falling hard for the ethnic-style middle-parted bun, smokey eyes and dainty black bindi. She is a vision in this indo-western ensemble.

Sonam’s Parisian Haute Couture FROW fashion is indeed a fascinating study into how to attend an international runway yet keep it deeply personal. She wants to showcase Indian crafts and textiles at the global fashion event and we find it very endearing. It is exciting to see this desi-representation go down at the high fashion event, which has largely stayed far away from any kind of inclusion of Indian designers and celebrities. All we are waiting for now is Rahul Mishra’s debut, he will become the first Indian designer to showcase at the fashion week ever. What exciting times!
