This year at Cannes Film Festival, most celebrities and Indian influencers proved their mark with their sartorial choices. And while most stayed loyal to the usual red carpet gowns, some had the strength to pull-off better, experimental looks. Amongst a few were actresses Shahana Goswami and Laapataa Ladies fame Chhaya Kadam. Goswami, who is in Cannes for the premiere of her film Santosh shared three consecutive looks on her Instagram.
The latest one, in a saree, grabbed the most attention. Designed by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, Shahana wore a stunning drape in ivory. The champagne-hued number was styled with a hand- embroidered Swarovski crystal blouse, an equally sparkling belt and a hand-cuff detail placed on the pallu edge. Featuring a hip-cut drape detail and multiple pleats, Shahana styled it with a pair of diamond earrings and hair set at the back with gel. Unlike most Indian celebrities, Goswami’s choice of a re-imagined saree was an interesting twist to Indian culture and a homage to our heritage.

Besides Shahana, another actress to steal the spotlight was actress Chhaya Kadam, who recently climbed the ladder to fame for her role of Manju Mai in Laapataa Ladies. For the momentous occasion, Kadam picked up her mom’s old saree with an aubergine coloured silk, brocade blouse. The combination of gold and purple was further styled with a Maharashtrian style nath (nose ring) and matching earrings. Spilling details about the look, she further mentioned on Instagram–”My dream of taking you on a flight remained unfulfilled….but today I am content that I brought your saree and nose ring to the Cannes Film Festival by flight.”
Kadam is attending the film festival for the premiere of her Malayalam film All We Imagine As Light. Well, thanks to these ladies, gowns found an interesting alternative. Besides Shahana and Chhaya, many Indian celebrities like Sunanda Sharma, King, and Ratna Pathak sported Indian designs on the global stage.
