Ritu Kumar’s New Store Is A Textile History Masterclass

December 12, 2015 | by Simi Kuriakose

Ethnic fashion has a new address in Mumbai courtesy veteran designer Ritu Kumar, who has just launched a 2,300 sq-ft. store in the city’s historic Kala Ghoda area. The designer is known for her love of traditional textiles, and its use in the store’s decor is a truly inspired idea.

Designed by Shweta Shah and Pranav Naik of Studio Pomegranate, the new store’s interiors are anchored around traditional Kalamkari prints from Andhra Pradesh, the oldest representative of vegetable dyeing in the world. Walking through the store is a masterclass in Indian history and textiles, as Kumar has collected Palampore prints from all over the world and recreated them here using digital renderings. Another craft she’s paid keen attention to is Ajarakh (a printing technique from Gujarat). Other prints include her signature Tree of Life motifs with distinct Chinese and European influences, and Deccan court scenes that display Indian, Chinese and Persian courtiers.

The 71-year-old craft revivalist says the area’s strong heritage connection was her primary reason for launching the flagship store there. The new location will feature her bridal collections, Indian formal wear as well as the prêt line Label, and will also have a bridal studio to look into personalised wedding fittings.

If Indian textiles and their history intrigues you, this store is a must-visit!
