Anant Ambani who recently got married to Radhika Merchant a grand ceremony on July 12, 2o24 held at the Jio World Convention Centre sported not one but two very precious Kalgi jewellery pieces. The Billionaire Heir sported a diamond Kalgi in his pagdi, while he wore another Kalgi on his bicep. Interestingly the Baazuband Kalgi was previously worn by her mother Nita Ambani during the Miss Universe pageant.

In a touching display of family tradition and love, Anant Ambani wore a piece of his mother, Nita Ambani’s, jewellery during his wedding. Specifically, he donned a bazuband, which is traditionally an armlet. However, this piece was unique—it was originally a kalgi, a headpiece that belonged to the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. This exquisite item, made of antique spinel, ruby, and diamond, reportedly has a staggering value of Rs. 200 crore. This act of sharing not only highlighted the familial bond but also underscored the rich cultural heritage that the Ambanis embrace.

Nita Ambani and the Kalgi

Nita Ambani had previously worn this remarkable Kalgi during the Miss World pageant in May 2024, held in Mumbai. She received the ‘Beauty with Purpose Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic contributions. For this prestigious event, Nita was adorned in a black Banarasi saree with intricate gold zari designs, paired with a matching blouse. Her elegant look was completed with a subtle touch of makeup, open hair, a black bindi, classic earrings and a kada. The Kalgi, repurposed as a bazuband, added a regal touch to her ensemble.

The Kalgi is a traditional headpiece typically attached to turbans, symbolizing honour, dignity, and royalty. Originating in the Mughal Empire, this stunning accessory has a rich history. The kalgi that Anant wore measures 13.7 cm in height and 19.8 cm in width, and is crafted from precious gemstones like ruby, spinel, and diamonds. The intricate design follows the Pachhikakaam technique, an Indian adaptation of the European claw setting style, where metal claws secure the diamonds firmly.
