Many Indian designers have made us proud in the past few years by showcasing the country’s rich heritage and craftsmanship on a global stage. And now adding to that list is Assamese designer Sanjukta Dutta. Known as the heritage revivalist, Sanjukta’s take on  cultural costume Mekhela Chador (traditional Assamese ensemble), is still one of India’s finest creations. With a mission to bring traditional Indian heritage on the world map, Sanjukta weaves the hidden gems of Indian states, to fit well in today’s world. And showcasing the beauty of Indian textiles for a global audience, she exhibited her collection at the New York Fashion Week. Worn by international models, the ramp at New York Fashion Week 2022 on Saturday was lit up by electric blue and silk in display. The collection showcased a beautiful marriage between femininity and modernism with a variety of Sanjukta’s signature Mekhela Chador, flouncy gowns, drape-skirts, faux-fur, and ruffled silhouettes. The couture celebrated Indian handloom and ensured contemporary ethnic ensembles for women from all walks of life. Titled as ‘Alphool’, meaning delicate, Sanjukta’s vision of dressing the modern woman and was remarkably exhibited by her choice of blues, indigenous motifs and mulberry silk.
