We love award shows, don’t we? I mean from witnessing our favourite stars being awarded to zooming into their sartorial choices, and well judging all the way long, award shows offer much more than you know. And when it’s time for MTV Video Music Awards, who can possibly miss all the red carpet drama? Right? This year, presenting a slice of Met gala, celebrities arrived in a much grander and theatrical version of their wardrobes and  had many heads turning. From Taylor Swift and Lizzo to the girls of BLACKPINK, everyone made sure to suit themselves well for the event. And let me tell you, that we have a lot of favourites this year. So, let’s dive right in.

Taylor Swift

The “Lover” singer made sure she had all our attention, as she arrived for the special evening. The musician chose to channel her look from her popular 2017 album–Reputation. She took a dip in crystals and opted for a piece from designer Oscar de la Renta’s Pre-Spring 2023 collection. The draped, crystal cocktail dress on the musician featured a semi-sheer thin fabric attached beneath the silhouette, serving as her second skin. The bodice featured multiple layers of illuminating crystals, attached in an entangled fashion. To complete the look, the winner of the MTV Music Video Awards for Best Video of the Year, wore a matching pair of open-toe silver heels and tied her hair into her classic bun. For accessories, she chose a pair of diamond drop earrings and decorated her face with red lipstick and tiny rhinestones.

Lil Nas X

Another showstopping look from the evening was brought to our screens by American rapper–Lil Nas X. Presenting a heavy-feather moment, the musician loaned inspiration from Beyoncé’s latest British Vogue cover and decided to wear designer Harris Reed to the VMAs this year. The head-to-toe feather ensemble featured a pair of intricately layered, feather pants in black, adorned with a theatrical tulle of the same fabric. To complement the monumental trousers, Lil Nas X wore a massive feathered crown and flaunted his polished washboard abs.

Lizzo

American singer and a total queen, Lizzo was no less spectacular at the VMAs this year. Much like Lil Nas X, Lizzo too was in a mood for some statement-making, as she arrived in a colossal, navy gown by designer–Jean Paul Gaultier. The strapless, asymmetrical number came straight from the designer’s Haute Couture collection and featured an extended ruched detail throughout the fabric. Lizzo paired the voluminous number with semi-sheer, navy opera gloves and completed the ensemble with gold ear cuffs and a lip ring. Her ensemble also gave a nod to the matchy-matchy styling technique, as she painted her lips with the same shade of blue.

BLACKPINK

The gorgeous women of BLACKPINK, made sure to twin in the colour black, as they made history at the VMAs. Unlike the other invitees, the k-pop group championed the ‘less is more’ formula. Lisa, trusted Celine to dress her up for the big event. The musician who made history by winning the Best K-Pop title, wore a simple black ensemble, with a centre cut-out and a long trail. Besides Lisa, Jisoo made sure to add some colour to her all-black Dior look, by choosing a semi-sheer, lace bralette and printed, floral skirt. Jennie on the other hand wore a Chanel two-piece set that featured two, tiny star accents in the centre. Rosé pulled off the edgiest of four looks in a Saint Laurent, black drape dress, that came headlined by a black floral accent and a draped trail in the centre.

Ashley Graham

Television presenter and model–Ashley Graham too stayed true to the unsaid, colour theme of the evening and trusted designer Katharine Polk to dress her up. The multi cut-out, form-fitting number was adorned with statement safety pins. Ashley also chose to put her stretch marks on display through the cut-out ruched number and we hail the queen for it! To decorate her look further, Ms Graham added a pair of chandelier earrings, and matched it with her footwear.

Anitta

Well, Anitta never disappoints and her sartorial decision for the VMAs served proof. The musician wrapped herself in red, as she picked label–Schiaparelli for the VMAs this year. The romantic hue on Anitta, featured a couture gown, displaying the many rich shades of red. The ensemble incorporated the form-fitting, long skirt, matched with a structured, mono-boob corset in velvet. She completed the look with sleek, greasy hair and stud earrings. Haute couture stitched to perfection!

Sabrina Carpenter

Musician-actress, Sabrina Carpenter fulfilled her Disney princess dream in a floral, hand-embroidered gown by Moschino. The multi-coloured, glittering silhouette featured a front keyhole and massive, side cut-outs that sang along with the trendiest silhouette of the season. Sabrina stayed away from any further sartorial experiments and designed her blonde tresses into dreamy curls and sealed them together with a black, velvet hair band.

Lili Reinhart

Actress Lili Reinhart paraded on the red carpet in a see-through black dress from label– Fendi. The actress slipped into a dazzling, multi-layer lace dress, featuring a plunging neckline and full sleeves. Ms Reinhart adhered to the unsaid colour code of the evening and stayed away from excessive accessorising to complete the look. Welcoming the gothic glam, Lili let her short hair loose and channelled a glossy makeup look, with excessive pink on her cheeks and lips.

The Vampire-esqué ensemble was further completed with 3D nails, piggy tails and a sharp black, eyeliner.

Conan further matched the look with a pair of wide-legged black trousers, a black lace choker and matching hand gloves. For hair, Gray let his natural curls intact and sealed the look with white, platform heels.
