Melania Trump’s White Suit For The State Visit Comes With One Desi Detail. Michelle Obama Did It Better

Everyone is talking about the Trumps. They are here in India for a state visit – which at this point looks like a guided tour with Narendra Modi. As I write this, the trio – Donald, Melania and Ivanka are here – FLOTUS and POTUS have spun the charkha, claimed to have tremendously enjoyed doing that and have now gone on to meet all the people waiting for them at the stadium. And while we don’t know what side we sit on, so we are going to be plonking our backsides on the fence, we know that we are not loving what Melania Trump has worn.

Melania Trump does love herself some muted and pastel shades and that’s what she picked to step off Air Force One and on to Indian soil. She wore a white jumpsuit which is tailored to perfection.

And while we love how it sits on her, we are not particularly charmed. When on a visit, most ladies ensure to include an ode to the country and its people. The jumpsuit Melania wore comes from a brand called Atelier Caito, which while known for its fashion, doesn’t have an Indian connection at all.

Except one tiny detail. Yes, it’s the green belt she’s wearing. The designer called it a sash but it looks more like a belt and this was made out of the fabric the designer referenced by consulting with early 20th century Indian textile documents. It’s made out of green silk and gold metallic thread. Some reports have claimed that this was Benarasi silk but the designer makes no mention of it.

While she may not have chosen anything representative of India, Melania Trump’s outfit choice also had Twitter in splits. A lot of people compared her jumpsuit to a karate outfit and while we don’t want to be rude, we do see it.

On the other hand, when Michelle Obama visited India with husband Barack Obama twice, her choice of outfits was entirely more layered. For her first visit, she chose an outfit by Rachel Roy – she’s an American designer but with Indian roots. Her father was Indian. The second time Michelle came to India, she chose to go completely Indian, picking a dress by Bibhu Mohapatra.

Hillary Clinton, Sophie Trudeau, all chose to go with outfits that were either made by Indian designers or were had some sort of connection to the country. Of course, we’ve only seen what she’s wearing on the first day and we are hoping the second day will see her in a saree or something equally beautiful. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
