The Masaba Gupta And Rhea Kapoor Collab Is Inspired By Their Moms And Celebrates Curvier Bodies. We Love That

Masaba Gupta and Rhea Kapoor are really out there living the fashionable BFFs dream! This ace stylist and designer duo also happen to be longtime friends and collaborators, making their mark on Indian fashion in their own unique ways. They also took their friendship to the next level by collaborating on a collection that the merger House Of Masaba values with Rhea’s penchant for creating signature looks out of simple pieces. Honestly, if we ever had the chance to work with our best girl, who also happens to participate and elevate our own fashion game, we’d jump right on it too!

On cursory browsing of the collection, we did notice the usual Masaba motifs, prints, and designs. The collection is dedicated to both Indo-Western staples like Dhoti pants and capes, and signature ethnic looks like organza sarees and pastel lehengas. It’s a beautiful collection of wispy pieces and feminine, yet structured, builds and flares.

But what we loved about it were the intimate details of inspiration and the journey behind the collection. In a series of Insta stories, Rhea spoke in length about the collab and where the ideas behind the collection came from. On a side note, it was kinda eerie to hear Rhea talk so up close and personal on her phone, she sounds so much like Sonam!

The Inspiration

One of the very first impressions we got from the early pictures was how bodacious and sexy the pieces were. Which was right on the mark since they were designed to be “feminine, sexy, soft, strong at the same time”. Rhea confessed about “growing up and coming to terms with being women”, as being a journey which was reflected in the silhouettes. They also dedicated it to their mothers, the exceptionally stylish Neena Gupta and Sunita Kapoor, “women who are traditional and sexy” and “films like Mandi”. The pieces are crafted to “Complement the body and complement the face. Masaba and I are both really curvy girls and we’re not a size 2 or a size 0, so”, revealed Rhea.

The Connection

While answering fan questions, Rhea especially stressed on them growing up as friends to be the driving force behind MasabaxRhea. They have collaborated many times, creating looks for Sonam Kapoor. She also revealed, “Masaba and I became friends because we met in Kathak class when we were really young…we don’t do Kathak anymore but we are still friends!”. The camaraderie that these two share reflects in the gorgeous clothes. Rhea also took the time to praise her bestie by saying, “I’m really proud of the way Masaba has bloomed. When we were young, she used to get teased a lot, bullied alot….and now she’s this goddess!”. We do agree with that.

The Conversation About Photoshop

Masaba and Rhea’s collection release was called out by netizens for being Photoshopped. This was followed by both the women releasing untouched proofing pictures on their social media, to prove it otherwise. Even photographer Joseph Radhik, who worked on the shoot, confirmed the same. Rhea commented, “Actually it’s really not that Photoshopped. It’s got some highlights and skin cleaning which is pretty standard, that’s why I put up an original picture of me and Masu (Masaba) to let everybody now that this is how we look”.

We honestly are getting a little tired of the witch hunt Instagram goes on every time there is something new from a designer or a celebrity. Women can be both famous and actually very beautiful at the same time guys, it’s not all smoke and mirrors all the time!

The collection is available in exclusive sizes of XS to XXL, with Custom Tailoring offered as well. As for the range, their range of sarees, lehengas, and capes are priced sensibly between 10k and 1.5L, across all stores and online.
