Let’s Talk About The Many, Many Problems With Priyanka Chopra’s Dress At The Billboard Music Awards

Look, there’s isn’t much to watch, see or get excited about these days. I get that. Honestly, I have spent a alarming amount of time tracking the movement of a snail, so I am understating it when I am saying things are slow. Which is why, when the stars step out for anything (lucky them), they are subject to intense scrutiny. Oh, who am I kidding, they are used to media talking about their outfits, accessories and what not. And we were especially excited to see Priyanka Chopra step out for the Billboard Music Awards 2021. Mainly because we wanted to see what Priyanka would be sashaying down the red carpet in. And then she wore what she wore and we are just…meh. We’re underwhelmed and a little appalled actually.

Priyanka Chopra, besides wearing Nick Jonas closely, also went with an ensemble that was boring, styled pretty shabbily and featured a brand that’s pretty problematic on its own. Priyanka wore a nude gown featuring a thigh high slit, a fashion she seems to particularly favour and I see why, it suits her. But this is where the good things end. The gown is by D&G, a brand that’s previously been in the news for being racist and homophobic, a look that doesn’t suit anyone. Given that Priyanka knew that she was going to be in the spotlight (when is she not?), the choice of going with a brand that hasn’t exactly been progressive is quite a let down. Indian fashion Instagram page, Diet Sabya, called out Priyanka’s choice of outfit stating, “They wrote, “Not Pri wearing a dress by the very problematic, racist and homophobic Dolce and Gabbana.””

Besides the obvious down in the choice of designer, Priyanka’s styling didn’t exactly have people gushing. The wide golden metallic belt which was custom designed caught everyone’s eye but we didn’t love it on her. It looks dated and uninspired. Also, I have one of those wide, gold belts and I bought it off the streets in Bandra so, unless Priyanka was going for upgraded street style look, the belt was a hard pass for me.

The jewellery by Bvlgari, while pretty, simply didn’t work for me. Sure it’s all things sparkly and shiny but it is also one of those things we’ve seen so much and too much of. So much more could have been done. So much more should have been done. While Priyanka Chopra hardly ever has a fashion misstep, we’ve to admit, we think this was one of those rare moments. Come on Priyanka, bowl us over.

Seen it all?
