Priyanka Chopra Got Customised Kaleerein And It’s So Cute. Here’s How You Can Make Yours Charming !

There a few things that are so unique to the Punjabi bride. She is the one with all the best bhangra moves in the house, gorgeous matha pattis, red and gold choodas, and of course, the beautiful kaleera. These pretty danglers are usually hooked on to bangles of the bride-to-be and serve as a sign of good tidings – that her life be filled with mirth and marital bliss. The ritual involving shaking the kaleera over the bride’s sisters or female friends is also a well-documented one, especially in Bollywood. The single lady on whom the kaleera falls is touted to get married next, eliminating the need of chaachis and maamis who go around picking their target and go “agli baari, teri!”.

For ladies who love trivia, a certain Punjabi legend speaks of the bride who was given half-cut, dried coconuts that were tied to her bangles. These were intended as a snack to keep her from getting ‘hangry’ since she had to travel for days to reach her wedding ceremony venue. This can be attributed to the most popular style of kaleera, which is umbrella-shaped and layered to the point of being the statement accessory of the entire bridal ensemble.

While bulky kaleerein are still the norm with traditional Punjabi brides, brides are updating it with trendier styles in a number of shapes and forms. Most recently we saw heard Priyanka Chopra Jonas customising her kaleerein with intimate details about herself and Nick Jonas.

Customized Kalire

Jewellery designer Mrinalini Chandra revealed that Priyanka got her kaleerein engraved with “a symbol from Greece, where Nick proposed to her to cupid, to a cross and the trishul from both their religions, an engraved silhouette of both of them” and also the character Mr. Chip Potts from “the couple’s favourite character from The Beauty And The Beast.” Coincidentally, Nick has played the character of Mr. Chip Potts in the Broadway production as well.
