The prestigious Cannes Film Festival has seen many Indian celebrities walk the red carpet, as jurors, guests at a premiere or as faces of global brands. And with each passing year, this roster of Indian stars attending the festival gets bigger and better. As the names in the list add up, every celebrity races to win praises from fashion gods with experimental looks in gowns and India-born lehenga. What also grabs the Internet’s attention is a scintillating partnership between celebrities and Indian designer houses, who represent the homeland’s culture on the world stage. Doing so consistently are some of India’s most loved designers, who have outshone international labels with impeccable creations. Be it a moment in saree or a pearl-soaked ghaghara choli, some of our favourite designers continue to nail it with each passing red carpet. So, here we are looking at some of these names who made India proud, by designing for the country’s famous faces at Cannes.

1. Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla

Right from styling for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Sonam Kapoor and now dressing Sara Ali Khan, AJSK’s approach to nailing Cannes has shifted over the past few decades. From monumental, brocade-soaked lehengas to vintage Indian sarees this year, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla has been a first choice for most Indian celebrities attending the Cannes. What surprised us this year was this couturier duo’s elaborate collaborations with Indian content creators like Dolly Singh and Masoom Minawala, who they chose to dress in custom-made designs for Cannes.

2. Anamika Khanna

With collaborations limited to Sonam Kapoor’s appearances at Cannes, Anamika Khanna has had an impactful display of designs at the film festival so far. From fusion sarees to lehengas and veils, Khanna’s personal aesthetic has helped many celebrities in presenting a slice of Indian craftsmanship in a modern cutout on the world stage. Previously known for dressing the fashionable Sonam Kapoor, Khanna returned this year to the red carpet to dress actress Mrunal Thakur in her famous couture style.

3. Falguni Shane Peacock

Marking their debut at the Cannes Film Festival, Falguni Shane Peacock walked the carpet alongside actress Mrunal Thakur. Through two custom-made designs for Thakur, the designer duo reinvented the idea of the Indian saree, with a twist of cocktail couture. Mixed with sorbet hues, a sexy waist cut and tons of feathers, the FSP glam was visible on the Cannes red carpet this year.

4. Sabyasachi

The Cannes red carpet veteran designer has curated some iconic looks for Indian celebrities at the film festival. Straight from the year 2015, when Sabyasachi walked the carpet alongside Miss India World 2011–Kanishtha Dhankar, who wore his iconic lehenga to the Cannes, till today when Deepika Padukone turned the most beautiful juror at the film festival in 2022, the designer’s legacy runs back to almost ten years. Throughout this entire decade, the Indian designer has partnered with celebrities like Vidya Balan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Aditi Rao Hydari and a zillion others, who took a flight to the French city.

5. Gaurav Gupta

Gaurav Gupta’s international presence has been soaring high in the past few years, but it touched the sky when actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan partnered with him for Cannes 2022. The actress presented designs from her homeland and supported Indian craftsmanship while sporting a custom-made, monumental gown by Gupta. Inspired by the birth of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love, the blush-pink silhouette was a moment to remember from last year’s red carpet.
