Did ‘House Of The Dragon’s Alicent Take Style Inspiration From Malayalis? Here’s Why The Internet Thinks So

Ever since its release the House Of The Dragon has been sliding into conversations on the internet. Serving to the fantasies of the Game Of Thrones fans, the prequel to this popular show has so far found a deep connection with its viewers. And while everything from princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s noteworthy portrayal to the detail-driven costume design is enjoying a moment on the internet, this new observation from the new episode of the show has the fans surprised.

In episode 2, ‘The Rogue Prince,’ viewers were visibly delighted to see Alicent Hightower played by Emily Carey’s sartorial choice. In the 53 minutes long episode, we see Alicent in a deep blue gown, featuring a multi-loop neckline, that runs down to the sleeves. Accentuating the regal shade, the textured fabric aids Alicent’s visible transformation from episodes one to two. Keeping her pale-adored colour palette aside, Alicent dives into a deeper and more royal shade to take the narrative forward. While her gown does the duties of stealing the scene, what caught the internet’s attention was her magnificent, brass neckpiece.

In the pictures shared all over Instagram, Indian viewers are happy to express a keen observation about the necklace and its resemblance with Kerala’s traditional jewellery–Mullamottu mala. The traditional gold jewellery is worn by Malayali women. The solid, single string features multiple jasmine-bud-shaped motifs. The significance of the flower also inspires the name of this heirloom jewellery, which is– ‘Mullamottu,’ (Jasmine buds in the Malayalam language). Besides the traditional necklace, Alicent added a pair of dainty, inverted two triangular earrings and tied her hair into voluminous curls. Reacting to Alicent’s choice of jewellery, netizens shared, “Mullamottu mala on Alicent. The Malayali in me is screaming!”
