After Actress Meera Chopra, Helly Shah Expresses Disappointment Over Indian Designers Refusing To Lend Their Outfits For Cannes 2022

It isn’t unknown that the lines between television and film stars in India are yet to fade away. This clear division between two industries and differentiation in treatment has always squeezed itself into many conversations. A clear example of this was Hina Khan’s first appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in the year 2019. It was then, that Hina spoke about the urgent need to blur these lines that draw a division between the two industries and how it affects the way even India’s leading fashion houses treat them. Since then, we have been hearing stories from many actresses who spoke about the struggles of sourcing a designer garment for any event, let alone the Cannes. One amongst which was also actress Yami Gautam, who flipped through the pages of past and opened up about her early days in Bollywood, when sourcing a designer dress was a big task.

While the Cannes Film Festival 2022 has now come to an end, the almost two weeks long event is now welcoming some unheard details spilt out by Indian celebrities, who walked the scintillating carpet this year. Returning from her big debut this year, actress Helly Shah has come forward to speak about her struggles in sourcing ‘the red carpet gown.’ Expressing her disappointment over the lack of support showcased by Indian designers, Helly revealed how many names refused to loan her their designs for the big day.

Followed by this, the actress resorted to wearing international labels and well, killed it on the red carpet too. A proud moment for India, particularly this year, the global stage was filled with many Indian faces walking the carpet. Perhaps offering a big opportunity to Indian brands for showcasing their stuff. But sadly, it was a missed opportunity, as Helly shared in an interview with a news portal, “I would have loved to wear Indian designers’ outfits at Cannes, that would have been a great feeling. But it didn’t turn out that way.” Helly was seen wearing designer Ziad Nakad’s coral green gown on the red carpet.

An incident similar to actress Hina Khan’s from her debut at film festival, Helly, who was shown the way to fame through television, also talked about the ‘TV tag’ that joins along. She also went on to reveal “When I go for film auditions, they look at my resume and say, ‘Arre you have done so much TV’ as if it is not something good.” She went on to say how the response at times can be demoralising and she only wishes for a time where everyone is treated equally.

And it’s not just Helly who has spoken her mind out, previously Priyanka Chopra’s cousin/actress Meera Chopra shared her two bits on the ‘madness’ of concentrating on fashion at a global event which is supposed to be about films. Talking about her struggles while sourcing an outfit, Meera expressed no Indian designer was willing to give out their designs. She also said, “Most of the Indian designers wanted to give clothes to Deepika Padukone, or want to close a bigger celebrity.”

Well, that is so not fair. I mean, we understand the importance of the ‘exclusivity’ factor followed by fashion houses, but for such a prestigious event, representation is all that we need and every kind of support matters. While post, Hina’s 2019 confession about Indian designers drawing the line between television and films, there have been a few changes but there still is a long way to go.
