Harnaaz Sandhu Wore Saisha Shinde’s ‘Winning Silver Gown’ To Miss Universe 2021, And It’s Got A Special Message

And she finally did it! Bringing the crown to India after 21 years, Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu has officially been crowned as Miss Universe 2021. A big win for the entire nation against contestants from 80 countries, the Chandigarh based 21-year-old is now the 70th Miss Universe 2021 and India’s third beauty to have won this title, after Lara Dutta and Sushmita Sen, at the 70th edition of the event which took place at Eilat, Israel. Apart from her winning answer and excellent presentation skills on the big stage, what caught our eyes was the winning gown in silver. Designed by popular Indian designer Saisha Shinde, the ‘winning gown’ as referred to by the designer herself, is a visual representation of Harnaaz Sandhu’s personality and dreams.

Dipped in a blend of two beautiful shades of silver and champagne, the scintillating show-stopper attire is divided into three parts, with heavily fringed beaded tassels around the waist. The gown is a tailor-made piece with emotions weaved in, and the mosaic and scattered pattern on the sides exhibit the cultural roots and aspirational side of the crown bearer. Paying homage to her home state, Punjab, the designs take inspiration from the geometric patterns of the phulkari motif, giving it a modern spin-off. While, the choice of colour defines victory, which is why it made it to the final gown, the well-structured silhouette, has got all the glitters, is poise and unique and definitely paid off the “sleepless nights” and “pressure” as mentioned by the designer post the big won.

Paving her way on the global stage, the new Miss Universe, wore designer Abhinav Mishra for the National Costume round at the event. Dazzling in a royal pink lehenga designed by the ace designer, the outfit is a visual presentation of India’s rich cultural heritage. Representing the Indian rani or queen, who is graceful and strong, nurturing and loving, fierce and bold, the heavily ornate piece had beautiful mirror work, zari embroidery and signature motifs by the label. Harnaaz Sandhu dedicated her performance to all those strong women out there who race battles every day with a smile.

Accessorising the entire look with statement matha patti and neckpiece, by curio cottage jewellery, the ensemble came with a custom-made, hand-embroidered mirrorwork umbrella which symbolises the royalty of India, designed by costume designer Reza Shariffi.

Choosing designers Pankaj and Nidhi for the preliminary competition, the copper-gold gown was definitely a stunner piece. The heavily embellished outfit, crafted in sheer orchid tulle and adorned with molten appliqué detailing, was weaved together in a floral pattern, a thigh-high slit and followed by a dramatic train. And in the words of Miss Universe 2021 herself, “Thank you Pankaj and Nidhi for making me look like a star,” and we agree!
