This season at the Cannes Film Festival was rather interesting and special for India since many from the country walked the red carpet. For the world’s most prestigious film festival, actresses from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Alia Bhatt whipped up glamorous looks and made sure we hailed them for impressive appearances. Making an iconic debut this year, was actress Alia Bhatt, who represented the country in many ways. Through her four looks for the film festival, Bhatt exhibited her impressive sartorial prowess and turned heads.

Amongst the four looks, her final outfit, made by Gucci was one the most iconic pieces seen so far. Making way for its first Indian silhouette, Gucci exhibited its version of the classic Indian drape–the saree. For the closing ceremony, Bhatt looked mesmerising in a GG monogrammed, shimmer saree by Gucci, which in no time became the talk of the town. But what went unnoticed was the misrepresentation by the luxury brand. According to the post shared by Gucci, accompanying Alia’s picture, the silhouette on her was described as a gown and not a saree.

Describing the look, the caption on their Instagram page read–”Custom Gucci gown with embroidered crystals in a GG Monogram pattern. The actress was also pictured in a custom three-piece set.” Calling it out, many enraged Indian fans of the actress commented on the post and wrote–”Umm that gown is called a sari. At least give credit to the cultures that wear it proudly. Guccis’s take is beautiful but saying gown is insulting the Indian woman rocking it.”

Many also called out the designer house for misrepresenting the Indian culture and not giving it due credit. Well, that’s right. For the unversed, Bhatt was styled by ace stylist Rhea Kapoor for her Cannes debut. Throughout her two-day stay in the French town, Bhatt exhibited many designer looks, from an Armani gown to a Gucci skirt set and scarf. But the Gucci saree stood out for all. The Cannes red carpet this year was rather scenic and special for Indian viewers, who were served with a plethora of Indian designer wear, and Sindoor-adorned hair. And for Gucci, we hope they fix the caption soon.
