Radhika Madan’s Red Carpet Look Reminded Us Of Bella Hadid’s Dior Dress And Not In A Nice Way

There are so many ways one can make a dress. There are already a few established silhouettes that are molded into designs to create original looks. A wrap dress can be altered in so many ways with embellishments, flares, and cuts…but at the end of the dress, it is a dress that you put on by wrapping it around your body. It is here that the creativity of a designer or a fashion label lies, on how they can present us with an unlimited number of unique designs birthed from a singular silhouette. Having said that, sometimes a designer is able to create something so unique, that it becomes a signature look for the label. It might not be so different from the rest, yet a fashion lover can instantly point on the individual maker behind it. That is what happened when Maria Grazia Chiuri, the artistic director at Dior, created the cult favourite sheer bustier dress.

Now that we’ve established that we can tell a Dior dress at first glance, we want to talk about the most recent instance that reminded us of it. Radhika Madan was one of the fashionable attendees at this year’s GQ Men Of The Year Awards. She walked the carpet in a tulle dress that at first..stopped our breath!

The pewter grey tulle bustier gown from Rudraksh Dwivedi features a strikingly familiar look that we have seen on Dior dresses. Variations of the bustier tulle gown have been a Chiuri’s signature design for the label. From Chiara Freegni’s wedding gown to Nina Dobrev’s Oscar dress, this style has been a magnet for fashion girls in the past couple of years. We associate the style the most with supermodel Bella Hadid’s then-controversial but now famous sheer gown she wore back in 2017.

The dress caused quite a few raised eyebrows because of the visible nipples and underwear on the model. But over the years, it has become an endearing fashion moment. The style was heavily featured in Dior’s Fall 2018 collection as well…

….which brings us to this: why would you design a dress that pulls so much inspiration from in popular design by an iconic label?  Did the design team not anticipate that hawk-eyed fashionistas will pick up on the obvious similarities? Guess not!

Radhika’s upset wasn’t the only letdown of the night for us. While we did see fabulous red carpet fashion from emerging style star Sobhita Dhulipala…

…and the always impeccably dressed Katrina Kaif:

The rest of the celebrities left us wanting more…

Sara Ali Khan

Sara Ali Khan gave us yet another underwhelming black outfit with her awards show style. The Monisha Jaising asymmetrical dress is a little too “cocktail party” and a little less “red carpet high glam”. A dress with big puff sleeves are supposed to be dramatic and yet here, it looks like any other LBD.

Diana Penty

There is only one place that a skirt suit is appropriate to wear for the night…a convention for female -pharmaceutical reps in the early 2000s. As for the red carpet at a GQ event, we think not. We would have loved to see the outfit without the turtleneck. A sweaty Mumbai evening is no place for high necks!

Kriti Kharbanda

Now we know what Elsa from Frozen will look like if she were to ever become a Bond villain. Yet another skirt suit on the carpet, we aren’t feeling the straight blazer with the pretty skirt. We love the net scarf though!

What are your thoughts on celebrities who turn up in “copied” styles? Should celebrity stylists be more careful with what they put our stars in or the celebs have the final say? Let us know!
