Exclusive: Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Costume Designer Niharika Bhasin On How She Designed Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit’s Sarees For Ami Je Tomar!

Bhool Bhulaiyaa is one of the most famous franchises that Bollywood has to offer. The costume designer for the third installation offered an exclusive glimpse into the intricate design process behind the iconic dance-off sarees worn by Madhuri Dixit and Vidya Balan. With a focus on balancing elegance and performance functionality, the designer employed luxurious fabrics, intricate embroidery, and nuanced colour palettes to reflect the personalities and narrative arcs of each character. Along with this, Bhasin also let us in on re-working with Vidya Balan after The Dirty Picture.

Niharika Bhasin On Designing Face-Off Sarees

When asked how she designed the iconic sarees, which would be an integral part of the storyline, for not one but two legendary actors- Madhuri Dixit and Vidya Balan. Niharika Bhasin said, “Designing for that iconic dance-off was exciting! Both Madhuri Dixit and Vidya Balan have such strong screen presence, so we had to make sure the sarees complemented their energy. We wanted to keep the sarees traditional but with modern cuts, so we opted for fabrics that had fluidity and elegance but also allowed movement for the dance. The colours were also key—each shade had to reflect their characters’ distinct personalities while keeping them rooted in the same world.”

Niharika Bhasin On Reuniting With Vidya Balan

We all remember Balan’s iconic role as Silk, giving an insight into the magic created on sets, Bhasin answered, ” Transforming Vidya for The Dirty Picture was an incredible journey. Vidya has such a soft, sweet face, but Silk is all about boldness, sensuality, and unapologetic confidence. The key was to step away from the obvious and think about what made Silk the icon she was. Her costumes had to reflect her audacity, so we used a lot of bold, bright colours and form-fitting silhouettes. It was about embracing her curves and giving her a powerful presence. The transformation wasn’t just about the clothes—it was the hair, makeup, and attitude that Vidya brought to the character. Watching her step into that role was like watching magic happen.”
