Skincare Tips & Tricks For The Busy College-Going Girl

Celebrity skincare expert and cosmetic dermatologist, Dr Jaishree Sharad, is here to solve all your beauty woes and make sure you have glowing, flawless skin, in her new column on Hauterfly — Skin Deep With Dr Jaishree Sharad.

If you are a busy working woman or a college-going girl and don’t have too much time to spare for your skin, just follow these basic important skincare tips.

Morning Ritual

Cleanse

First, you must cleanse your skin properly. If you have oily skin or have acne, use a face wash containing salicylic acid. This will unclog the pores and control the oil secretion. If you have dry skin, use a moisturising cleanser. If you have sensitive skin, use a soap-free cleanser, such as Cetaphil or SebaMed Olive.

Hydrate

A moisturiser is a must after cleansing. A water-based moisturiser, if you have oily skin, and a cream-based moisturiser, if you have normal to dry skin should be applied on slightly damp skin. This traps moisture within the skin, keeping it supple through the day. Moisturise your face, neck, arms, and legs.

Protect

A sunscreen should be applied in all seasons. You can use a gel-based or mattifying sunscreen, if you have oily skin. A cream-based sunscreen or a spray will do, in case of normal to dry skin. Keep the sunscreen in your purse and reapply if you remain outdoors for over 2 hours.

Beautify

You should consider adding a light foundation or mineral powder, a blush, a lipstick, and an eyeliner to your beauty kit, and you are good to go.

Bedtime Ritual

Cleanse

Step 1: Use a cleansing lotion or baby oil to remove your makeup. Do not forget to clean out your eye makeup thoroughly.

Step 2: Use a gentle cleanser to remove the dirt, grime, sweat salts, and soot, which layers your skin through the day.

Prevent

1. Use a Vitamin C serum on the face. Vitamin C prevents pigmentation, brightens the skin, and reverses sun damage.

2. Apply an under-eye cream.

3. For those below 30 years, use a light moisturiser with vitamin C & E. If you have acne, you may have to use your anti-acne creams, such as benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin.

4. If you are above 30, apply a night cream, which acts as an anti-aging cream and a moisturiser.

5. Look for active ingredients like Retinol, Peptides, Co enzyme Q 10, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K. They boost collagen and elastin fibres within the skin, and improve skin texture and tone. You can also apply vitamin E, which hydrates and improves the skin’s elasticity.

3. Diet

1. Have plenty of brightly coloured fruits and  vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, oranges, cherries, plums, berries, red grapes, spinach and broccoli. These have a high content of antioxidants, especially Vitamin C, E, Beta Carotene and Selenium.

Antioxidants are free radical scavengers and they protect the skin from oxidative damage, thus helping your skin to remain youthful and glowing.

3. Remain well hydrated by drinking 2-3 litres of water, coconut water, lime or lemon juice, and buttermilk. Avoid aerated drinks, sugar, and refined flour in your diet.

5 Must-Haves In Your Bag

1. Sunscreen – both UVA & UVB protective. Reapply if sweat has wiped off the previous application or if you are outdoors for over 2 hours.
2. Wet Wipes – to dab and wipe off the sweat and grime.
3. Thermal Water Mist – these waters are obtained from springs, which are rich in minerals and trace elements. Hold the mist about 5-6 inches away from your face and spritz. Wait for a minute and blot the excess. This hydrates the skin, prevents your makeup from blotching and keeps you fresh.
4. Hydrating Skin Lotion – apply on the hands and feet whenever the skin feels dehydrated.
5. Hydrating Lip Balm With SPF — avoid licking or pursing your lips when you feel thirsty. Drink water and use a lip balm.
