Isha Ambani Wasn't The Muse For The First Schiaparelli Saree, THIS Indian Queen Inspired Their 1935 Saree Collection!

Isha Ambani recently turned heads by wearing a stunning blue saree from the renowned Italian haute couture house, Schiaparelli at Anant Ambani, Radhika Merchant’s sangeet ceremony. The billionaire heiress paired her exquisite saree with a silver blouse and polki jewellery, making a grand fashion statement. However, Isha isn’t the first to don a custom saree from this iconic fashion house.

Isha Ambani’s Custom Schiaparelli Saree Is Not The First

While Isha Ambani’s saree is making waves in the fashion world, it’s essential to note that the relationship between Schiaparelli and Sari-inspired designs dates back to 1935. Elsa Schiaparelli, the founder of the couture house, designed an entire collection of formal evening wear gowns inspired by saris. These designs were influenced by Maharani Sita Devi Sahiba of Kapurthala, who became a muse for Schiaparelli after arriving in France in 1934.

The First Schiaparelli Saree Came Out In The 1900s

Elsa Schiaparelli’s collection of 1935 featured sari-like drapes rather than using saris outrightly as named. This distinction,  made in Billy Roy’s Frocking Life: Searching for Elsa Schiaparelli, demonstrates how South Asia was present but not always openly acknowledged during colonial rule. Princess Karam or Maharani Sita Devi of Kapurthala had been highly influential in the designs created by Schiaparelli. Her style inspired various types of evening gowns including those with harem pants and long lamé scarves. Princess Karam herself was delighted to see her traditional attire inspire leading Western designers.

More Details On Isha Ambani’s Schiaparelli Look

On the other hand, Isha Ambani’s blue custom saree was designed by Daniel Roseberry, which makes it the first modern-day Schiaparelli saree. While Elsa Schiaparelli’s original designs in 1935 were inspired by traditional Indian attire, Isha’s saree represents a contemporary interpretation, blending timeless elegance with modern fashion sensibilities. Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, Isha Ambani sported two variations of her custom Schiaparelli saree. In one look, she wore the royal blue saree with a silver embellished blouse featuring a circular geometric design. In another, she opted for a royal blue corset.
