Exclusive: Costume Designer Niharika Bhasin On Vidya Balan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Looks: “It Will Be Unforgettable”
Film and fashion always go hand in hand. Over the years, Hindi cinema has been a major source of inspiration and trends for fashion nerds for years now. And credits are due to costume designers, who make the magic happen on the big screen. The latest in line is popular costume designer Niharika Bhasin, who has been given the charge of reprising one of the most iconic characters in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Known for fashioning–Rock On, Band Bajaa Baraat, Delhi Belly, Fitoor, Fan, Bombay Velvet and many others, Bhasin is exhilarated to join hands with Anees Bazmee for the third installation of the popular horror comedy film.

After two fabulous collaborations with actress Vidya Balan in The Dirty Picture, Shakuntala Devi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, will mark Bhasin’s third project with Vidya Balan in a feature film. Speaking about the same, Niharika sat down with us to spill the tea about the project–”I’m not revealing any secrets YET! But I promise you, you all are in for a treat! The project is a meeting of some really great minds, and it shows. What I can say for now, is that it’s a stellar cast. And I am so grateful and honoured that I get to go to work with these people every single day.”

Speaking about Vidya Balan’s character look in the film, Bhasin added–”I don’t think words will do justice here so I won’t even try! All I can say is that it’s something that is bound to be unforgettable! Vidya’s versatility is the stuff of legends. She’s someone who pulls different roles and looks beautiful. And her costumes have been designed to elevate and complement her talents. They’re more than just garments and jewellery. Rather, they play a multifaceted role in character development and storytelling. Designing and styling for Vidya for this project has been intensely creative and deeply immersive. It’s like peeling away the layers of an onion. We are working on building a character that kind of just envelopes you and pulls you into its world–everything from the footwear, the accessories, the silhouettes – the kind of detail that is going to build Vidya’s look is mind-boggling! It’s something that can only be experienced rather than described.

Niharika also revealed more about her love for Vidya Balan, and how this new project has her excited–”I have had the good fortune of working with on two projects in the past–Dirty Picture and Shakuntala Devi, both of which went on to become iconic in their own right. I’m sure the third time’s a charm and this collaboration of ours is going to be just as memorable. I share a great comfort level and synergy with her. Both of us being very passionate about our crafts and understanding that we’re a part of something much bigger than ourselves, pushes both of us to push the envelope and break new ground. We sit together, chisel and fine-tune the character and constantly touch base on decoding every minute detail of the character. Vidya makes the process truly immersive and exciting. As a costume designer who loves to tell a story through costumes, I couldn’t have asked for a better collaborator!

On research work for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 costumes, Niharika mentioned–”I love strong female characters. I love styling for strong women characters in a film. So while researching is a huge part of the creative process, my personal interactions, experiences and aspirations also are finding their way into this. Costumes have the power to set the mood and tone for the scene. The big and small details add up and make sure the movie stays with the audience long after they’ve seen it. Details like the play of light and dark colours complement the character’s presence and narrate a story even when not much is being said verbally. A character needs to wear something that represents their nature in the movie.”
Well, eversince the announcement of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has surfaced on the internet, fans of this film franchise have been happier than ever. The exciting star cast also includes Kartik Aaryan, Triptii Dimri, and is said to also welcome Madhuri Dixit as another lead.
