Buying Your First Beachwear? Here’s What You Should Know Before Hitting The Store!

Your vacation is set, sunscreen is packed, and you’ve already packed that digi cam for cute beachside pictures. But when it comes to beachwear, you don’t know where to begin (and why it feels like a whole fashion genre you somehow missed). I remember shopping for my first beachwear, half-excitement and half existential crisis. After trying on almost 10 swimsuits, I had a lot of questions. Was I supposed to go full Baywatch, or stick with a “safe” one-piece and oversized sunglasses? Spoiler: I left with a printed bikini I never thought I could pull off—and ended up loving it.

Buying your first swimsuit and all the sunny extras can feel like diving into the deep end—but trust me, the water’s fine. Whether you’re bikini-curious or cover-up-committed, here’s your guide to embracing beachwear with confidence, style, and a splash of fun.

Your Guide For Buying Beachwear

1. Start With Your Comfort Zone

Yes, unlike Instagram’s FYP, your first bikini doesn’t have to be a tiny and leopard-printed one. Always start with silhouettes that make you comfortable, maybe a classic, a high-waisted, or even a swim dress. After that, you can always experiment with your size, style, fit, or trendy ones like mesh panels or a one-shoulder one. You can always try a few different shapes at home or shop from somewhere with a flexible return policy.

2. Prioritise Fit Over Size

Swimwear can differ from brand to brand, so don’t focus much on numbers; rather, than the fit. A great fit should feel snug without struggling to dig in, provide support, and help you feel free to move. Try brands that offer a variety of sizes, adjustable straps, and built-in support.

3. Don’t Skip The Coverups

You must never skip beach coverups because they’re your beach besties. Take things like a lightweight kimono, sarong, mesh dress, or even an oversized shirt that can transition you from the beach to the boardwalk. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or rayon that dry quickly in the air.

4. Invest In Quality

Instead of buying from an unknown place, invest in quality because a good swimsuit can last you for years. They even retain their shape despite the sun, sand, and saltwater exposure. It might cost you more upfront, but in the long run, they are worth it. Look for swimwear with double-lining, reinforced stitching, and fade-resistant materials.

5. Own Yourself

Trust me, confidence doesn’t come from a certain body type, it comes from owning your space and style. Everyone has a ‘beach body’ by being at the beach. So let go of comparisons, slip into your swimwear, and enjoy the sun. Try wearing your beachwear around the house a few times before wearing it outside.
