Exclusive: Celebrity Stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania On Hair Trends, Festive Fashion And Celeb Bridal Looks

Popular Bollywood costume stylist–Anaita Shroff Adajania is known for her popular fashion collaborations with celebrities. From styling Deepika Padukone, and Alia Bhatt to dressing up Ranbir Kapoor, there is no celebrity who doesn’t dream of working with Shroff Adajania. Known as Bollywood’s first successful stylist, Shroff Adajania’s prowess in the category is unbeatable. Recently taking the spot as one of the trend forecasters at TRESemmé Style Collective at the recently departed FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week, Anaita joined popular names like Amit Thakur, Falguni Shane Peacock, Loic Chapoix, and Priyanka Borkar. Discussing the upcoming style trends in hair and fashion, Anaita in an exclusive conversation with me, spoke about the madness of festive fashion, hair accessories, celebrity weddings and more.

Q: What was the process of spotting these hair trends?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: Earlier last month, TRESemmé convened a panel discussion on various aspects of hair styling with the TRESemmé Style Collective that all of us engaged in. There were creative brainstorming sessions as we analysed international and Indian catwalks, red carpet and celebrity looks, as well as TikTok and other online and pop-culture style markers. We also worked with TRESemmé to simplify, demystify, and break down these trends into easily achievable and accessible styles for all Indian women. Post the discussion, six trends were shortlisted. Further on, to bring this to life, the hair stylists worked through a step-by-step process of re-creating these styles for consumers, along with tips on how each trend could be styled for various occasions.

Q: What hair accessory trends do you think shoppers must keep an eye out for this festive season?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: I think the ribbon and the bow are making a huge comeback. Whether you tie it up in a ponytail or even when left loose in a knot, it makes for a great look.

Q: You collaborate with such a fun roster of starlets. What is the most common request in terms of style and hair looks that you receive?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: I think it’s different every day, the technicalities of hair looks are best left to the hair experts. But I think it’s important to look at face shape, what is the overall look the celebrity is looking at that day and adapt to that.

Q: What goes behind picking a hairstyle to compliment a fashion look?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: That’s where we come in as stylists, we decide to put in a look with context. It could be contemporary, vintage or something else wherein you put in for example a 60’s style with a twist, maybe give it a straight edge instead of the usual. There’s no one straight answer, it can change every day, depending on the look.

Q: If you could revisit hair and fashion trends from an era, which would that be?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: The 90’s. I love the hairstyles from that era, the beehives, backcombing and the cute little hairbands, I love that, and I love the fashion of the 90s as well. It’s something I revisit a lot in my work.

Q: What does it take to create a good hair day, every day?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: That would be a hairdresser’s answer. For me, it’s a simple 90’s blowout.

Q: In terms of fashion styling, how is the work different now from the time you started?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: When I started, there weren’t many brands in the country, now there are so many more options to pick from that it makes our job so much more exciting. We can offer different looks to different people. Indian designers have grown so much and they are also not just creating formal or dressy wear, there’s a differentiated category that’s upcoming which is amazing.

Q: What are the upcoming style and hair trends for festivity?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: We’ve just unveiled 6 incredible trends at the TRESemmé Style Collective at Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI. While I love all of them, the layered lob is a personal favourite, I think it works on everyone. The slick bun is another great one that you can style with different partings.

Q: You’ve also styled many Bollywood brides on their big day. What are the things that one has to keep in mind, while creating their bridal look, knowing it’s got everyone’s attention?

Anaita Shroff Adajania: For me, when I’m working with a bride it’s all about her. It’s not about trends, it’s not about just that moment, it’s about creating something forever that will always make them look and feel their best.
