The first Monday of May, popularly designated to the Met Gala brought fashion’s finest names to the red carpet. From the South Asian troop of artists, actress Alia Bhatt marked her second, most marvellous appearance at the gala, celebrating India. Bhatt walked the red carpet wearing a gorgeous Sabyasachi saree and described her experience in a detailed Instagram post. Designed by the Indian style maestro Sabyasachi, Bhatt’s saree was a mix of nostalgia and newness in the way colours, cuts and hairdos were combined.

Made within a period of 1965 man hours with over 163 craftsman building the piece to reality, the saree featured Sabyasachi’s love for delicate florals, married to 1920’s favourite fringe, stitched to the side. The double pallu was incorporated using the same fabric, varying in length. Like a gown, her saree veil swept the Met Gala carpet floor with the rest hugging her tightly. The actress further styled the look with an old-school hairstyle topped up with a tiny braided bun and tons of curls. She accessorised the look with a maharani-esqué headpiece, styled like a luxurious headband and matching gemstone earrings.

Bhatt’s team included Amit Thakur, designated for hair, personal makeup artist Puneet B Saini, Dolly Jain for the saree draping and Anaita Shroff Adajania putting the entire look together. Like most times, the actress played with a freckled look, adding a sense of natural, soft glam, reminiscent of the time. The sleeveless blouse featured loose, umbrella sleeves with a massive fabric bow sealing the princess look together. The actress brought her understanding of the year’s theme Garden of Time – an ode to art and eternity to play in India’s beloved saree.

Not just Bhatt, but the designer of her saree–Sabyasachi, also marked his presence at the Met Gala and also became the first Indian designer to do so. Well, truly iconic!
