LFW 2016: Gaurang Shah Merged Indian With Vintage French Designs

A stunning amalgamation of Indian textiles and vintage Western styles, Gaurang Shah's show was the highlight of Day2, LFW.

Vintage silhouettes and traditional Indian textiles worked in tandem at the Gaurang Shah show on Day 2 of Lakme Fashion Week Summer Resort 2016. Titled Calico, the designer — who is known for his exquisite Indian wear (especially saris) — crafted his display of garments fusing handwoven textiles like khadi, muga silk and organza with the jamdani technique. The designer used a combination of motifs that ranged from Mughal floral elements to even paithani designs.

A highlight of the show was the live music provided by Manasi Scott and band, while models strutted down the ramp (including a cute Carol Gracias with her baby bump). While a part of the showcase had a display of saris, the other part of the collection showcased garments using Indian textiles that reminded one of the Belle Epoch era — right from the pleated and voluminous silhouette gowns to the hair and makeup and even the styling. The designer refrained from a particular colour space — we saw whites, greens, browns and purples, among others.

All in all, while the DNA of Gaurang’s show was heavily Indian, it was masked perfectly with a Western European influence.
