SBS’s hit K-drama Would You Marry Me has been under a huge controversy despite its record-breaking ratings. The Jung So Min and Choi Woo Sik starrer recently featured a sensitive topic about s*xual harassment in its sixth episode, eliciting scathing criticism on the internet. The scene, which was broadcast on October 25, has now resulted in official complaints being made to the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC), calling for action against what viewers termed as a “tone-deaf” representation of sexual harassment. Jung So Min And Choi Woo Sik’s K-Drama Would You Marry Me Under Criticism
In the Would You Marry Me scene, Yoon Jin Kyung (played by Shin Seul Ki) gives CPR to a woman who suffers cardiac arrest in a public place. As she is giving the woman aid, someone snaps a photo of her secretly, zooming in on her cleavage. Baek Sang Hyun (acted by Bae Na Ra) sees this and covers Jin Kyung with his coat, taking over the CPR. He later encounters the man, physically attacks him, deletes the video, and threatens him with legal retribution for illegal filming, telling him, “It looks like this is your first infraction, so I’m letting you off this time.”
What angered viewers was not only the attack, but also the way the scene was set up to lead into the event. Many felt that the attention was diverted away from the violation of the female victim to the heroism of the male character and a moral lecture. Critics claimed that this belittled the gravity of digital s*x crimes, which have become an emerging social problem in South Korea.
The outrage was immediate. SBS first posted the scene on its official YouTube page, but the scene was removed after viewers took to social media to lodge complaints. A few users described the sequence as irresponsible and out of touch, insisting that Would You Marry Me should have made the victim’s reaction the focus rather than allowing a male character to forgive the perpetrator.
So far, SBS has not issued an official public statement about the controversy, leaving the audience to call for responsibility from both the producers and the network.
