Wonder Girls Sunye Under Fire For Supporting Charlie Kirk Following His Assassination
Netizens are outraged at Wonder Girls Sunye for honouring Charlie Kirk.

Former Wonder Girls leader and vocalist Sunye has shocked K-pop fans after finding herself at the centre of a controversy. Yesterday, the popular K-pop singer posted a picture on Instagram commemorating American political activist Charlie Kirk, who passed away on September 10. Kirk was an infamous figure in American politics due to his anti abortion and pro-gun stance. Read on to know more.
Wonder Girls Sunye Faces Intense Criticism For Supporting Charlie Kirk
Wonder Girls Sunye uploaded a video of Charlie Kirk’s wife, Erika, speaking about her late husband, alongside a caption featuring a Bible verse from 1 John 4:9-10. The verse read, “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.” While Sunye framed the message as a spiritual reflection, her decision to publicly pay tribute to Kirk quickly drew criticism online.
Charlie Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth movement popularly recognised for its pro-Trump politics. He became a polarising name in American political circles over the years, often criticised for his radical speeches on topics of race, religion, and social policies. For many, Sunye’s choice to honour him symbolised her support and alignment with his radical beliefs.

On Korean discussion forums like TheQoo, the responses were quick and severe. Netizens were outraged at Sunye’s post about Charlie Kirk, asking why on earth a celebrity would openly pay tribute to someone with such a controversial image. Responses included, “She must be mad. Are Protestants all that strange?” and “Isn’t he a racist white supremacist?” Others moved further, criticised Protestantism as an institution and claimed that Sunye’s act highlights Korea’s wider religious ideology.

Although Wonder Girls Sunye has been relatively low-key in the industry since leaving the group, her religion has always been a central part of her public persona. Before Sunye, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon also came under intense scrutiny for supporting Charlie Kirk on Instagram in a now-deleted story.
