Why Did Netflix Split Stranger Things Season 5 In Three Parts? All You Need To Know

Stranger Things enthusiasts, take note as Netflix is wrapping up the Hawkins saga in style. At the 2025 Tudum fan event, the streamer announced that the long-awaited fifth and final season of the show will be launching in three individual parts. And if the new promo is anything to go by, this sendoff is going to be epic. Season 5 debuts with four episodes releasing on Thanksgiving weekend (November 26), with a second set, episodes five through seven, arriving on Christmas Day (December 25). The series finale, one episode, will arrive on New Year’s Eve (December 31), providing a cliffhanger ending to both the year and the show.

Why the division? From a strategic point, the staggered launch coincides with significant holidays when audiences will be at home and binge-watching. By providing episodes over festive seasons, Netflix keeps audiences engaged via cliffhangers but also maximises viewership during prime streaming times. The other key reason for this choice is the series’ heavy reliance on visual effects. With each season, Stranger Things has been more and more ambitious, which has built the demands of post-production. By breaking up the episodes, the VFX crews have more time to tweak the high-stakes action scenes, something particularly important for a show that lives by supernatural spectacle.

Narratively, Season 5 picks up more than a year after the events of Season 4. The town of Hawkins is still reeling from the chaos of the opened Rifts, and the stakes are higher than ever. According to Netflix’s synopsis, the fall of 1987 brings a looming sense of dread. Vecna is gone, and Eleven has gone back underground as the government enforces military lockdowns in Hawkins. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance draws near, the ultimate showdown draws nearer, and it will be the worst one yet.
