And amid this, it was also disclosed that he was trying to secure Portuguese citizenship for his ex-wife, Karisma Kapoor and two kids. However, recent updates suggest that the Bollywood actress said no to that offer. The duo were in touch through WhatsApp, and here’s all you need to know about it.

As quoted in HT, documents submitted in the court showed Sunjay Kapur helping Karisma Kapoor acquire a Portuguese citizenship. In one of the WhatsApp chats, it showed the former telling the latter that she would have to give up her Indian citizenship for that, with a message that read, “India does not support dual citizenship. However, the actress’s lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, told a completely different story to the Republic World.

He said that she completely denied giving up her Indian citizenship. He also stated that the businessman’s move for Portuguese citizenship cast suspicion on the will. He said, “Because there is clear evidence that at the end of May this year, which is supposed to be two months after the will was actually executed, he was trying to get a Portuguese citizenship, certainly for his children, and possibly for Karisma Kapoor.” Jethamalani added that he was toying with the idea of citizenship for his two children- Samaira and Kiaan.

He cited that properties overseas would exempt him from inheritance tax. This would have benefited his three children, one from Priya Sachdev and two from Karisma, since Portugal does not impose inheritance tax. However, if in May 2025 he was pursuing citizenship for his children to avoid such taxes on overseas properties, it appeared contradictory that he had already executed a will in March 2025, in which all the overseas properties were devolved to Priya Sachdev and not to the children. This was highlighted as a suspicious circumstance.
