Sharmila Tagore On Dharmendra
During a chat with PTI, Sharmila Tagore said that Dharmendra was a aafable and cooperative person who met the rich as well as the poor with the same warmth. “He was just different. He never forgot his roots, and he would talk about it openly. He was, as they say, a man of the earth, and he remained very close to his real self… I didn’t see any change in him with stardom and popularity,” said the veteran actress. For the unversed, the two worked together in several Hindi films, but their pairing in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films always stood out.
The duo had collaborated on Anupama and Satyakam, which were one of the best films of their careers. The most popular was the comedy-drama called Chupke Chupke, which Tagore believed should have won a National Film Award. The late actor Dharmendra played the role of a botany professor pretending to be a Hindi-speaking driver in the film. She said that he was brilliant, but in those days, comedy films getting awards was rare.
The actress remembered how he extended his shooting hours for her during the making of Mere Hamdam Mere Dost. This happened because she was doing a double shift in the morning and then working with Dharmendra from 2-10. And when they couldn’t shoot the iconic ‘Chhalka Ye Jaam’ song till 10 PM, the director requested her to come the next day. The actor stated that she already had a morning duty for another film the next day, and in the evening, she had to depart for Kolkata since her husband, cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, was playing a test match.
This led to her requesting Dharam Ji to extend and finish the song that night only, and he agreed. They ended up shooting the song till 6 in the morning.
