On 16 September 2025, the world bid farewell to one of Hollywood’s all-time icons, Robert Redford. The legendary 87-year-old actor died at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, surrounded by his family. Various Hollywood veteran names, such as Jane Fonda and Meryl Streep, honoured the Oscar-winning actor. Who Is Robert Redford?
Robert Redford was not only a brilliant actor but also a changemaker. Redford was also a screen legend, director and an environmentalist. Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. on 18 August 1936 in Santa Monica, he grew up in a working-class family and went on to become a global icon of film and culture in the second half of the twentieth century.
The actor initially became popular in the 1960s due to his handsome appearance and charming performances. Redford’s breakthrough was in the romantic comedy film Barefoot In The Park. The actor later appeared in the film Sundance Kid in 1969, which became one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed films. The movie solidified him as a leading star, and the Sundance Kid role would even give his next film institute its name.
In the 1970s, Redford had become one of Hollywood’s most dependable actors, playing starring roles in critically acclaimed movies including The Sting, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and All the President’s Men, in which he played the role of journalist Bob Woodward.
What was different about the actor’s path was not only his award-winning film but also Robert Redford’s interest in selecting projects which were both socially and politically aware.
Redford was also passionate about supporting independent films. He established the Sundance Institute in 1981, which went on to host the Sundance Film Festival, now a globally important outlet for independent film producers. Throughout his career, Redford was the recipient of many awards, including an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2002 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
