Who Was Ozzy Osbourne, Legendary Metal Singer And Black Sabbath Frontman Dead At 76?

Ozzy Osbourne, the larger-than-life Black Sabbath frontman and icon of heavy metal history, has passed away at the age of 76. His family announced the devastating news on Monday, revealing that he died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. No other information has been released regarding the cause, the long struggle with Parkinson’s disease and other ailments was no secret.

Who Was Ozzy Osbourne?

Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, Ozzy began life as an underdog who became a rock superstar as lead vocalist for Black Sabbath a band credited by many as giving birth to the heavy metal genre. Their darkly rife, hauntingly lyrical music shook up the world of rock music during the 1970s. With such classic albums as Paranoid and Master of Reality, Ozzy earned himself the nickname “Prince of Darkness,” one he’d claim to fame with for decades to come.

Following his firing by Black Sabbath in 1979 for drug and alcohol abuse, Ozzy embarked on a phenomenally successful solo career. His first solo album Blizzard of Ozz was an immediate success, with singles such as “Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley.” Throughout his lifetime, he sold over 100 million records worldwide across both his band and solo careers with the release of 13 solo albums, many of which sold multi-platinum.

Aside from music, Ozzy became a cultural icon. In the early 2000s, his dysfunctional family life was featured on MTV’s hit reality show The Osbournes, introducing him to an entire new generation of fans. Controversies, including the infamous bat-biting incident, swirled around him, yet fans loved his raw honesty and surprise gentleness.
