Popular Kannada actress Ranya Rao have been making headlines since her legal trouble after being detained by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). This happened recently at the Bengaluru airport for allegedly carrying around 14.8 kgs of gold. Authorities have confirmed that she was taken into custody and was even presented before an economic offences court, which ordered a 14-day judicial remand. Here’s more information about the actor.

On March 3, 2025, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) detained Ranya Rao, the daughter of Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation) Ramachandra Rao, at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Before entering the film industry, Ranya Rao, who is originally from Chikmagalur, Karnataka, attended Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering in Bengaluru to study engineering. According to a number of media stories, Ranya is DGP Rao’s stepdaughter.
Ranya made her cinematic debut with the Sudeep-directed and Sudeep-starred Kannada film Maanikya. She played the part of Manasa, the protagonist’s love interest and affluent young lady. In 2016, Ranya Rao stepped outside of Kannada cinema by starring alongside Vikram Prabhu in the romance drama Wagah, her first Tamil film. She made a comeback to the Kannada cinema business in 2017 with the comedy Pataki, in which she portrayed Sangeetha, a journalist and Ganesh’s romantic interest.
She describes herself as a “seeker, traveler, star gazer, and a sunset lover” in her Facebook bio. The actress may have attempted to use her contacts to get over customs inspections, according to preliminary findings. Authorities are also investigating whether she was a part of a wider smuggling network between India and Dubai or if she acted on her own.
