What Is The Meaning Of Heera Mandi?

In literal translation, Heera means Diamond and Mandi means market. The word Heeramandi (The Diamond Market) was used to refer to a rich neighbourhood and was a term that originated in Lahore. The word also refers to Lahore’s red light area. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series Heeramandi is also based on the life of courtesans. However, the word originally originated from ‘Hira Singh Di Mandi’ which was a name used for Hira Singh’s Food Grain market. Later on in the 15th and 16th centuries, this particular market became the hub of  Tawaif (Courtesan) culture. Many women performed classical performances and this started during the reign of the Mughals. The place became a brothel house after the invasion of Muslim ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali., and with the British rule, it became more solid.
