Explained: What Does A Dating Ban Mean In K-Pop And Why Is It So Controversial?

If you are a K-pop fan, you must have known about the concept of a dating ban. Unlike celebrities in the West, public relationships in East Asian celebrity culture, especially in the Korean entertainment industry, are often discouraged. Recent dating rumours between BTS Jungkook and Aespa Winter have reignited the conversation about the concept of a ‘Dating Ban’. Read on to know what this term means and how it affects fandom culture.

What Is A Dating Ban?

It is believed that K-pop idols are sometimes put under a dating ban, which starts from the time they are a trainee and might extend for a few years after their debut. During this time, the idols cannot enter into a romantic relationship with another person, as it may affect their career.

However, there is no solid evidence that this ban is contractually binding. According to previous reports, different companies have different rules. YG Entertainment reportedly discourages idols from dating till they earn a certain amount of fame. For JYP Entertainment, the dating ban, which was previously alleged to be for 5 years, has been reduced to three. SM Entertainment and HYBE reportedly do not implement bans, but idols are advised to keep their dating lives out of the public eye.

Is A Dating Ban Ethical

While some people justify the ban as it is implemented during a K-pop idol’s most crucial time in their career, that is usually during the first three years. They believe that dating may distract the idols or lead to scandals. However, others feel that a dating ban feeds into the parasocial relationship fans have with celebrities, which can turn harmful really fast.

When Aespa Karina was confirmed to be dating actor Lee Jae Wook, she was met with a lot of backlash and even had to post a handwritten apology for her actions. K-pop idols HyunA and Dawn were removed from their agency, Cube Entertainment, when they publicly announced their relationship.

Most recently, people sent protest trucks in front of HYBE and SM Entertainment after dating rumours between Aespa Winter and BTS Jungkook went viral. The so-called fans accused the two of “betraying” them.

Hence, the idea of a dating ban contributes to the harmful mindset that K-pop idols should refrain from having a romantic life. Depriving them of this basic right also strips them of their humanity, and hence, companies should be discouraged from putting these bans on their artists.
